ibruprofen; does it mask pain or help heal the injured area?

hi i strained a msucle in my upper back and had some pain, took some ibruprofen, went away. but dont know if its healed or not, i dont think it is but damn my body is doing a good job at making me think otherwise, lmfao. um i was wondering if ibuprofen masks the pain instead of helping it heal, or is it acutally helping it heal by stoppping the inflmmation which in turn decreases pain?

ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, so it will not "heal" an injury, but it will reduce the inflammation caused by said injury, thus reducing pain.

its funny i rather deal with the pain than taking ibuprofen or tylenol. I hate taking those pills, but I dont mind consuming creatine, protein, preWO, DAA, etc...

Except that the anti-inflammatory action of ibuprofen blocks the M-Tor pathway, thus reducing muscle synthesis. It's alright to pop a couple once in a while to relieve acute pain (especially during competitions), but using a regimen for chronic pain is ill-advised for athletes. You should primarily be addressing the underlying cause of the injury through rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Also, it's not a bad idea to consult a doctor if your problem seems to drag on.

anti inflammatory. doesnt really heal your injury, just prevents it from swelling as much as it potentially can. get a heat pad and use that. works wonders. i use it on my neck and back every night. recently just sprained my wrist. iced it for the first 48 hours then heat the next 3 days and pain was gone, full range of motion back with no pain.

Ice, rest, physical therapy type exercises, glutamine 10 grams per day. Ibuprophen reduces muscle gains by up to 50%, will not heal, just masks pain.

That's a bit far fetched, you got any links to back up that claim?

Unilateral bicep circumference in untrained individuals with a therapeutic dosage is much different than maximal performance in trained athletes at a 'useful' dosage. The majority of research backing up the role of ibuprofen in limiting protein synthesis came out in an era when the Olympic training center was shoveling 800 mg tabs (as in, there was a candy dispenser full of tablets) into athletes based on the concept of reduced inflammation leading to faster recovery times. We now know that this is not the case.

I'm not saying that ibuprofen will saw your biceps off if you want to pop a tab once in a while, but keep in mind that these "moderate" dosage studies are only researching a limited scope of training with about 10 percent of the maximum dosage. Hell, I usually take down 800 mg of ibuprofen in a 4:1 mg ratio to caffeine during powerlifting or strongman competitions, and that happens both before and after comp. I do limit my contact with the drug during normal training, though.
