So I'm thinking I found a way to make some easy cashflow (500+ a week, but....)
I"m thinking there HAS to be a reason that no one else is doing it
There is a product that is selling on ebay (I checked the feedback of the people selling it, they sell quite a few per day) for over $700 as buy it now listings.
Before buying one on ebay, I found a way to get them for $400 (just a discount the retailer is willing to offer me). Knowing this, if I were to say, ask the distributor to sell them to me for $400 and sell them on EBay for ~$550, would there be any hurdles I'm not seeing that I'd have to work through?
I mean... why wouldn't everyone else do the same thing? Not a single one is listed for below that price on ebay... and people are still buying them

How many is the distributor making you buy to get that price?
How many competitors?

Listing fees, ebay fees, and paypal fees will eat into around 20% of your profits.
Shipping charges.
A distributor is going to want your tax ID and business license information depending on where you live.

You have to understand that majority of ppl only go to work and come home. That's all, they don't want to work more after 10 hours of working at their jobs. They do not have much time for themselves after family and dinner. Also need to have motivation for it. Other reasons are out there. You can make good money doing anything out there. It's how far you take it and how much time you invest into it. They already spend majority of time at work.
Even if it's simple as selling on eBay. They just don't want to bother with it. That's why there are rich people and poor people.

There is a lot of product, and I wouldn't even have to buy it from the ratailer until I sold it on ebay. I have about 30 feedback on ebay (mainly as a buyer though) but I could use my dads account with 200+. Will not be awaring on product. Sorry

go for it broski, might as well do it with one first
see how it goes/how fast it sells etc.
see how much profit you make to how much effort you put in and judge whether it is worth doing it with more

I used to do this with monitors, there's really no downsides and it's strictly undercutting the opponent
Facts are, you should probably start cheap (to get good feedback) But then move your price up to only 10-15 dollars cheaper than the 700$ ones and wait for them to undercut you (and you go back and forth until they can't drop anymore) to maximize initial profits
Even for 10$ cheaper, everyone's going to go to you instead of them (hell, maybe even 5 dollars - but that's risking it since they probably have better/ more trust able feedback than you atm)
Also, you're going to have a lot of down days where you don't sell a lot and have stock laying around so don't count on it as a full time job

That's what I'm going to figure out on monday. I mean, I'd be buying it for $400 from an individual who is making commission, but their company also sells the same product on ebay for $700... but since he would be making money I don't see any reason he'd care (its it probably makes up like .05% of their sales)

If you have some extra cash you are willing to lose, then give it a shot with a small order. See if you can move the product fast enough and make enough profit to justify the effort put into it.

Only thing I could imagine is put pressure on your distributor.
But I'd certainly try it with one first.

the only hitch i'd worry about is your supplier being annoyed when you say "ok thanks for the discount I'LL TAKE TEN OF THEM!!!" but if they are okay with it, go for it

Naive like what? All of misc will steal your "glorious" idea? We couldn't give two fu**'s, plus we don't know your dealer. Telling us what you're going to sell will help us figure out how much you're actually going to have to mark up your product (from duties, shipping, etc.) Anyways, if you're going to make half ass threads where you require help but are too secretive to let us help you, don't. Yeah, that's my big snag, especially because they're a retailer not a distributor who sells the same product. I'll probably just buy my one, then ask if it would be possible for me to buy them in bulk. I'm going to call the manufacturer on monday if that doesn't go as planned and see how many i'd have to buy from them to just order from them

yes, you could give two ****s.
Someone else might say "hey, that sounds REALLY ****ING EASY" and do it themselves
I already got 3 pm's from people asking to just sell it themselves and give me commission... so yeah, there are others more than happy to do it themselves

theres nothing they can really do OP... but if you start to take a lot of business off them they will just drop there price lower than yours, untill really everyone would be seeling at this $400 mark if thats the cheapest around. worth making the monies while you can though.

Right. Because you're worried that three more Miscers selling the product that you said was already saturated will make that big of a difference. I think you're trying to pull a Boostbrah on some noobs.

Only other major hitch I'm having trouble with is this:
From what i've seen... lots of companies are willing to discount this product (getting it at $400 is easy) but not one advertises for a price lower than $700, so is it possible the manufacturer doesn't let them advertise for a lower price to keep their 'image'? And, if so, by selling (as a regular customer) in quantity the same product at $550, am I breaking any rules?

Yes, by not letting any of them take a financial risk (I said no to everyone) I'm really scamming people. And I never said it was saturated... maybe at $700, but surely not at $550

my buddy did this about 12-13 years ago when computers were just starting to become common household items. he sold millions worth of computers at half the price of competitors in literally months. problem was he started attracting a LOT of attention from places like future shop...they hired PIs or told government to look into his operations.
my buddy's bank accounts were frozen during investigation, which meant he could not pay his staff, and could not buy the computers to fill the back orders. customers and employees started raging....long story short he fled the whole scene and never checked what ended up happening to all those millions in the bank.
there are rules against fair market competition. get in contact with someone in the industry to find out more. get all your ducks in a row and have fall back options incase things start getting nuts. basic things like, business bank accounts without daily transaction limits, hire an accountant to ensure you pay all taxes on time...etc.

Essay Brah
Just assess the risks. Try to identify potential ways you may lose profit or time. This includes:
-eBay fees
-PayPal fees
-taxes you pay at end of year( I just paid 20 percent at end of year on the papers I wrote in 2012, and I def felt it)
-the time it takes for you to package and ship items
-shipping costs
- have a plan for how you will deal with returns. Realize that in the case of returns you lose money indirectly because now one item is spending a few weeks going back and forth in the mail instead of being in the hands of a happy customer.
Formulate your price taking into account stuff like what I mentioned above. Then figure out what your profits will be, and how much work it required of you. This will help you realize if it's worth your time.
