At least they are trying. These guys are actually getting in a rack, whereas I've seen football strength training programs have their athletes do Leg Presses.
I think the basis of collegiate strength training programs are more or less get to guys together in a team atmosphere and have fun getting in shape. It's hard to believe that they have enough knowledgeable staff to go around correcting everyone's technique. Just my take

Apparently a bunch of Clemson fans found this thread. They are mad about a bunch of "bodybuilders" are knocking their football team. There are some hilarious threads on their fan site about this forum. This just keeps getting funnier.
While some of them raise valid points, here is a typical response.
"Bodybuilding has nothing to do with strength, endurance or explosiveness. Bodybuilding is all for show and bodybuilders forgoe endurance, mobility, flexibiltiy and explosiveness so that they can "sculpt" theirselves into a picture of a superficial look.
Frankly, big biceps are not that necessary for most football positions. "
Also they think we are all on steroids and we wear banana hammocks...Last edited by Kharvok; 04-21-2012 at 02:34 PM.

Then what exactly is your problem? Armchair strength coaches notwithstanding, there is nothing beneficial (clearly in anything they are doing at Clemson), involving their strength and conditioning practices. I'm neither a professional strength coach, nor a Clemson hater and TBH, not even really a college football fan. But you don't exactly need to be a certified pro to understand that what are doing is stupid and a waste of time. In fact in following the link to their forum about this thread, they seem to agree with us

And you have problems with that? She has a decent arch, yes, as most women who aren't overweight will. But other than that, she's got a sturdy, tight base, she's going full range of motion, and actually handling weights she can press.
Brb humping 315 into submission because I need to be explosive for football. Get real kid. You're beating a dead horse.

I would say most of those guys squatting with chains looked like backs to me - and they arent worried about getting 3 white lights as much as they are trying to get more explosive off the ball.
I saw a guy cleaning 350 and another guy 2 board pressing about 425, which is probbaly better than 99% of the posters here.
Seriously, if you think these guys are chumps post a video of you cleaning over 350.

lol at them getting their underarmour in a bunch.
I bet most people in this thread alone could out squat/deadlift 95% (if not 100%) of their team, within the same weight classForum Representative

1)There is a length tension relationship for rate of force development. Just because you put 80lbs of chain on the bar, that does not mean you are developing explosive strength. They aren't squatting better because of bad coaching, bad mobility, and sub par strength levels. It has nothing to do with 'just getting into football position' or whatever other bull$hit people use to justify being too lazy to do something right. You are correct, they aren't squatting for lights but from theat video, they aren't squatting for football either.
2)Being strong in the weightroom has zero carryover to the field. I can attest to this as someone who has both played pretty high level college football and also programmed the strength and conditioning for pretty high level college football. The strongest guy in the weightroom is never, ever the best athlete on the field. That being said, make the strong athlete faster with max weights, then all of a sudden you see a carryover. A guy that can squat 500lbs (which is a stretch for most football players) at 0.7m/s is developing less force than a guy that can only squat 450 at 1.2m/s. What I am getting at is, the best athletes move their max weights the fastest. Very rarely does the strongest guy on the team have that quality.
3) Good recruiting makes good football teams. Good powercleans make for $hitty team lifting youtube videos.

i agree with this mike (even though 450 @ 1.2m/s is stretching it, but i get the point you're trying to make).
i will leave this thread with 2 comments:
1) i would like to jump all over this but these are coaches that get paid the big bucks, so i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. i can't really judge a program based on a 3min clip of what looks like 2 workouts.
2) these are collegiate football players, not powerlifters/weightlifters/etc."Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength." - Arnold

And this man can out squat/bench/deadlift that whole team.
This isn't about Clemson, it's about the gamecocks, but every time I've been to the USC weight room I also lol at the ****ty numbers on their wall. They had some at under 400 squat, and 250 bench. These guys are ****ing college altheltes, some 20-22 years old. I'm ****ing 16, and can squat/bench(and probably power clean if I did it more) more than most of thoses players who weigh the same as me. It's just ****ing unreal that people actually think that football players are strong anyways. Always makes me laugh.Look me in the eye. It's okay if you are scared, so am I, but we are scared for different reasons. I am scared of what I willn't become, you are scared of what I could become. Look at me! I will not let myself end where I started, I will not let myself finish where I begin. I know what is within me, even if you can't see it yet. Look me in the eyes, I have something more important than courage, I have patience. I will become what I know I am.
