I have 2 20 kg dumbbells, but I need 40 kg to do dumbbells rows. I also need to do one armed bench press with 30kg.
Any idea how to create one dumbbell out of the two or how to tie them together, what kind of grip to use?

If I fill it with sand, how big is the sack going to be? I need to change the weights for different exercises relatively quickly. I don't really know where to find heavy weights, coz I live in the city... maybe from a construction site or should I order sand online? I could fill up multiple sacks with different weights though.

Any other idea about how to create a homemade dumbbell? It needs to be small and weights should be easily changeable. Target weight is 30kg.
1. put sand in sack - bit hard to vary weight
2. put brick in sack - can vary weight easily, requires lot of space
3. put water bottles in sack - can vary weight easily, but requires lot of space.
what else?

Buy a heavy duty sack and 2 rollers .....build a fairly good cable machine out of wall-mart stuff at a wall-mart price
Make it double for 2 hands....
You are set to do any exercise on this planet ..... old school style .
Also what Farley said is good..... a bar and some plates is a very good investment.... you need a power rack and you have your home gym.If your body cannot handle it, make sure sheer willpower will.....

Haha! I was trying to scroll down to say the same thing. I mean, if you are going to through all of this trouble to buy a sack and sand or whatever to kinda make something work, why not just invest in a cheap weight set and call it a day. A bunch of good deals on eBay or craigslist.

Tying them together just for doing rows is fine, but that won't work well with iso moves like curls because the rope would rotate around and probably fray over time.
Don't combine dumbbells for pressing or extensions unless you have a deathwish.
The only thing about tying 2 dumbbells together for rows (use at least 2 loops on the outer edges) is that you'd need a lot more room to do them and the lower dumbbell might hit the ground at the bottom of the row.
