Just figured I'd share the weight roller coaster a fat guy goes through low carbing
My first week back to keto I dropped from 327lbs to 312lbs in SIX DAYS. I carbed up and ballooned right back up to 327lbs, and now 5 days later I'm around 316lbs. The gain and loss of water weight is absolutely crazy. It definitely makes it hard to judge "real progress", but I'm hoping somewhere in those pounds at least a little bit of it was fat
It's also done a number on my energy levels. I've been working out consistently for about 3 months again now, and on my second week of keto I'm a weak little bitch. All my lifts are plummeting.

I lost 20lbs of weight my first week of keto
I've gained and lost over 100lbs more times than any man alive should. Do as I say and not as I do.

blah blah blah, I don't really care. I was just providing a fun ancedote. I'm really not worried. I've been ketoing and low carbing for longer than most of you have even had accounts on bodybuilding.com
Your advice is well meant, but half of it is wrong.
Dont carb up again for another 3 weeks, then you can carb up at the end of every week.I've gained and lost over 100lbs more times than any man alive should. Do as I say and not as I do.

Because I can Going an extra week or two for a newbie is a good idea because it reinforces eating patterns and ensures the newb has successfully gotten into a state of ketosis for a little while.
The fact is though, carbing up isn't hurting anyone. This keto diet isn't magic. Keto has lots of benefits, but it doesn't need to be anywhere near as extreme as the "bros" would have everyone believe. Especially at my weight. Do you really think a 300lb guy has to be worried about an induction phase? Hell no, I'd lose weight eating candy bars at this weight as long as it was under my maintenance calories. If you're not a competitive model, you can relax a little bit and enjoy your life while you're living it.
What's the worst case scenario? I didn't lose an extra 1/4lb that week? It really doesn't matter. Real Progress is made in months and years. That's a simple concept the bros overlook because they think they're in some sort of race.I've gained and lost over 100lbs more times than any man alive should. Do as I say and not as I do.

We'll see lol. So far bb.com has been a much different place... and as much as i want to post i really dont have much to say. I already know how how to eat and lift so all i can really do is try to provide ancedotal advice to newbs. Id start a log but oh man this place has more trolls than ever!
Otherwise im around making good progress and already close to squatting my body weight again. Good times!
I am glad that some of the prevailing advice is less extreme than it was a few years ago.I've gained and lost over 100lbs more times than any man alive should. Do as I say and not as I do.

Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general - Mark Rippetoe
GOAL:
For my job working with the USFS in Montana I must: be able to carry felled trees, lift boulders, ruck 70# puncheon planks, haul tools over 10 miles along with personal gear, and beat down the camp-invading brown bear. Kidding!
But I do want to be able to run full speed while chasing a bear with a can of pepper spray, screaming obscenities with a hand-rolled cigarette in my mouth.

I can agree that its mostly bro science, but studies have demonstrated that 2 weeks of low carb/hi fat does increase fat oxidation and attenuate glycogenolysis during exercise.
My personal experience, reinforces this idea on both ends. When I go 2-4 weeks on low-carb/hi fat, I see that my results of a cutting phase are markedly better than if I carb up at the end of the first week. I also find that the longer I go without carb ups, the less I want carbs and the more I can taste the natural sweetness in things like broccoli and cabbage. On the other hand, if I carb up every week, I cant seem to ever kick my craving for some ice cream.
Considering you've been doing this so long and you are currently obese, I dont think I'm giving terrible advice when I suggest you might benefit from restricting carbs for a longer period of time.
You gotta do what works for you tho. Good luck figuring it out.http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=608052853&posted=1#post608052853
