Don't worry about your starting total.
I had trouble benching over 100 pounds when I started lifting, couldn't squat, and i struggled to deadlift anything over 200 pounds for several weeks.
I think my total is around 950-1000 now and I'm doing my first meet this weekend. It isn't about having a huge total, its about loving a sport and having the balls to step onto a platform in front of your peers and give it all you've got.

My dad had a super-cheap bench setup in our basement. The bar was hollow metal and the plates were concrete encased in plastic shells that were starting to crack. I used to rep 45-65 when I was 12 or 13 years old.
I got pinned by 95 the first time I ever tried to bench at a public gym. lolPRs (raw) 535/365/520

The first time I ever benched I was 9 and benched 65. I would mess around on the bench once a month or so when I'd have to sit around at the gym when my dad was lifting, but didn't really start lifting until my sophomore year of high school when I was 15. When I started then I was benching 170, squatting around 200 and deadlifting maybe 300. Weights class in high school was 2 days a week, alternating bench/clean and squat/military with a lot of random stuff. I started seriously training to compete my sophomore year of college and my first meet I went 380-336-402 @ 219 BW.

First time I Benched I did the bar for a few reps. I could maybe get 65. Squats I did not do for a long time but after having done some leg presses and other leg stuff I did 155. Deadlifts were like 225.

First time in the gym (May 2009): Squatted 95. Benched 95. Deadlifted 135. Badly.
First competition (March, 2010): 1103.
Last competition (November, 2011): 1719.
Goal for next competition (June, 2012): 1800.
Goal for June, 2013: At least 1943 (single-ply elite @ 275), then burning all of it and buying a bunch of multiply gear, never walking anything out ever again, and gaining about 40 lbs.
(would've progressed faster, but I spent the entire time from July, 2010 to now dealing with the aftermath of breaking my radius in training. My bench is probably 100 lbs below where it should be. I didn't compete between May, 2010 and July, 2011)Last edited by takeittakeit; 04-11-2012 at 11:11 AM.

I didn't train for my first meet. I was playing football at the time and was too busy being functional to worry about things like strength. I totalled in the low 1500's. I think I pulled something like 640 on my last attempt.
My last raw meet I went 640, 425, 755 coming off of a torn hamstring. At a DL meet in March, I pulled 815. I'll find out where my bench and squat are at when I get to nationals in June because right not, I have no idea.

I think I take the cake for weakest starting lifts. The first time I squatted I did 65lbs on a smith machine, and then a couple weeks later I started doing real barbell squats at about 95lbs. My bench press was also similar. I didn't start deadlifting later on, but I think I started at about 135.
So I had a big three total of about 325lbs.

Started messing around 5 years ago, just benched and curled, never squatted, got to 170x1 bench with horrible form.
Found a friend who was a powerlifter, started training me, started squatting, benching properly, deadlift, this was round 9 months ago.
Squat: 45x5
Bench: 45x5
Deadlift: 135x5
Squat: 285x5
Bench: 200x5
Deadlift: 275x5 (Hurt back so didn't deadlift for months)
