Maintaining Bars
What do you guys use clean or lube the bar with? I've heard wd40. 3in1 oil. Do you guys recommend anything else better than those option? What about 20w motor oil?

WD40 is great for stripping the rust off bars but make sure you clean it off well. Then use 3 in 1 to lube it. Theres probably better stuff out there for both, but these are readily available.

^^^ What he said. For lube, 3 in 1 is best. It's a light oil that was used for lubing sewing machines ( think small fine parts) so it works well on bearings. You just need to apply it occasionally.

What about motor oil? Isn't it the same as the 3 in 1? I use it to oil the chain on the concept2. Would it work the same for bars?

I could be wrong but, I always thought you were supposed to use a silicone lube on concept chains?
Not sure about the motor oil thing, but 3 in 1 is cheap and lasts forever. Just buy a bottle and you wont have to worry about it.

When I think motor oil I think of stuff for cars. The oil for concept II chains is a mineral oil which should be fine for a bar, however I prefer grease and use a basic spray white lithium.

For my Concept 2 I use bicyle chain lube and that has worked well for years. I think 20w is too heavy, not that it won't work, but it won't allow a bar to spin as freely as a lighter oil. BTW, 3in1 motor oil is 20w.

On the concept site. They actually recommend 3 in 1 or 20w motor oil for the chain.
I was just wonder what else work for bars beside the usual wd and 3 in 1. Hence the motor oil question. Want to know if something else might work better.
Cleveland. What's the white lithium you use? How is it working for you? Do you have to leave it overnight and wipe it off next day like the oil?
Thanks for all the replies guys

I actually found the original bottle of chain oil from Concept II that I got with my Model B, it's standard mineral oil. Also, they sent me a 4oz bottle, of which there is probably 3oz left - Concept II ergs are pretty bulletproof and don't require a lot of maintenance.
As for which lithium grease, I use whatever white lithium grease I have lying around. Most likely it's CRC or Blaster brand. I just spray a single line of it on the bar and then reinstall the sleeve, rotating the sleeve will disperse the grease evenly enough.

I lube my bars with white lithium grease from a spray can.
