Op what does Junkanoo mean?Any posts made are purely fictional in nature and by no means is anything I say to be taken seriously. Any and all pictures I post are pictures widely available on the internet and any discussions I am involved in are purely hypothetical or are commentary in nature and should not constitute advice or be considered advice

Junkanoo dates back to the days of slavery when the slaves were let free for a day to party!! So every year on Boxing Day and New Years, we have Junkanoo where hundreds of people display their Junkanoo costumes, beat their drums, shake their cowbells etc and have like a big festival inter streets. Usually goes on from 12 midnight till about 9 in the morning. Groups compete against one another and are judged. Search Junkanoo in the Bahamas on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. They are like wild monkeys if you ask me

Yea, drugs are everywhere and some of the locals try to sell it to any tourist they can. They just passed a law this month that anyone caught with a joint will get 4 years in prison! I think that's kind of outrageous, but it's now apparenly law. I doubt they will enforce it though. Drugs are everywhere and not hard to get which is sad, but again, a reality. Also, fighting is a big thing at Junkanoo! Rival gangs buck heads there a lot and so they usually have a lot of uniformed police as well as under cover cops in plain clothes around. It's usually the younger kids that get in these squabbles (teens to mid 20's). In Freeport, Grand Bahama, it's a lot better atmosphere and the reason why is because junkanoo here starts at mid night after everyone is all tanked up from drinking and partying so they come out there not in their right mind. In Freeport however, it is done in the day at 6:00 pm so people aren't messed up by them and usually leave junkanoo and go and party afterwards.

Won't embedd for some reason, but here is the first clip that came up on junkanoo. They have a set drum beat they go by and shaking of the cow bells, but the rest is up to you what you add. This clip was taken on Baystreet (downtown's strip) and as you can see there is light so it means this is towards the end of the festival probably 8:00 am. These guys are still punding away (they do two laps) after starting 12 am the night before!

While I agree the Freeport junkanoo crowd is a lil more civil. The Freeport Junkanoo and the groups are a joke compared to Nassau. The size of the music section in say the Saxons is literally bigger than the biggest group in Freeport! Anyone who wants to experience what junkanoo is really about needs to go to Nassau. Buy some bleacher seats and enjoy the show, it really is something to see.

I've been to Fiji, Belize and Mexico. All three places have very shallow water. I can honestly say, I'm NEVER walking to shore again. You step on so many sand-corals, sting-ray's that hide under the sand and hurt your feed, those shallow waters are beautiful, but they're a death trap. Not to mention, there's a bunch of sharks in shallow water...

Beautiful pictures.... If I lived there I would be the biggest bum. Wouldn't move off the beach.
Yes, you can eat barracuda. They have to be relatively small before they start eating a bunch of crap (that's when you can't eat them any more). I want to say, if I remember correctly, under two feet long.

always wanted bleacher but money always prevents me.
the girls man they dress to impress...... even the young ones....... in my honest opinion the bahamas needs to legalize weed/ hemp, and treat other drugs as a social problem and not a crime..zombie survival Charlie squad

dont need to tell me that twice man, ive lived there for a few years in the heart of nassau, imo the biggest fail on the war on drugs is treating it as a crime issue for the users instead of social.
even though her majesty prison is one scary fukin place, it still does not deter crime cause the politicians and law enforcement are to ill equipped and rife with corruption, the police force doesnt even have a patrol heli.zombie survival Charlie squad

Let me tell you how screwed up the prison system is. A friend of mine is in Foxhill/Her Majesty Prison (we knew each other from kids) for having a handgun (which is illegal) and tons of ammo. He calls me every week from prison from a cell phone he got off of the prison guards. He calls me to ask me to put minutes on his phone! I ask him how is that even possible to cell phones there? He's response was almost everyone has one. Chargers and all lol! That's just plain nuts!!
On the Junkanoo that's totally right that it it is much better in Nassau. More of a competition here whereas Freeport is just so layer back with it. These guys build costumes year round and take it pretty seriously. "Rushing" in junkanoo is a serious workout lolMy Bahamian Photo Album <'))><

Oh, and this place is a riot right now! Elections are in less than two weeks! We now have 3 major parties...FNM, PLP and now the DNA. DNA was formed by a former FNM mp who has a candidate running in every constituency. This elections will be a serious one!! The present pm just spent 100 million on road works and still needs more lol! Can't wait for it to be over though. Tired of being stick behind motorcades!

Yea, you got it pretty much right. The bigger they get, the more chance you have of getting poisoned by them. Heard they are probably the sweetest tasting fish, but haven't gotten the nerve to try it yet

Oh... That last pic is a tuna my friend caught. While pulling it up to the boat, his girlfriend stuck her underwater camera underneath the water and started snapping and caught that photo. Pretty cool!
