Hey guys, was wondering if some of you could answer a few questions. I know things differ from place to place so I am just looking for some general info.

I recently got out of the military and am about to start a 5 year apprenticeship for another job. I will be moving to 1 of 2 larger cities to do this. Now, I have always liked the idea of doing volunteer EMT work and when I did my first responder training in the military I really fell in love with that aspect of it.

I currently work with a guy that is a volunteer first responder/fire fighter so he has given some info. I had asked him if it would be best for me to just take the EMT-b course as soon as possible and then apply once I move to different places. He told me in a larger city where they have a paid force it is extremely hard to become a volunteer there. He said my best shot is to have my actual residence in one of the suburbs of the city that has an all volunteer force and he told me that a lot of them will pay for your EMT-b and you just sign an agreement to volunteer x amount of hours/month for 2 years and if you fail to meet that you pay back the money for the classes. Is this true for a lot of areas?

Also, what is the usual required minimum hours/month that you need to be able to volunteer and how does it go? For example, say I work 10 hour days and would be fine with volunteering 2-3 hours a few days a week and put in some 8-12 hour shifts on my days off. Is that fine or do you have to sign up for full shifts?

The career field I am going into will have me working a lot of hours but after a few years I will have the availability to take off a few months a year if I feel like it. I will probably spend half that time traveling and half volunteering (at least thats the plan) Do they allow that as well? If I volunteer 300 hours one month and say the minimum is 50/mo would it be acceptable to volunteer that much if there is room to do so, but then not volunteer for a month straight?

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance and thank you for the work you guys do.

Stopped by my dads station to drop a shirt off for a buddy. Course this is A shift day but I know the guys there so I jumped on the rig when the box came in. Saw the smoke from the approach.

My buddy was on the nozzle. I helped grab the plug and connect it to the keystone.

Depends on agency. I have friends down there did volly route. Some agencies will put you through a EMR class while you go through Fire I. Some require EMT, I/II, etc. Just snoop around, call, and be aggressive. More than likely you'll end up in a basic class before you can blink.

So I had a friend who syncope, 2-3 minutes long c vomit c congenital heart issues.

All OCFA did was a blood pressure and lung sounds

    No 4/12 lead
    No blood sugar check
    No orthrostatics

In fact they talk him into signing AMA. So we pick him up and go POV. Hmm the hospital ER is conveniently oversat with crews on the wall.

Are you F'ing kidding me OCFA? Should I have said something to this crew and call them out? Or do a customer satisfaction survey that they pride in getting 97% or something. How much of this **** goes on that the general public accepts because they lack knowledge in EMS and medicine

I don't give a fuk if you are a retirement house by the beach, I'm sure that lazy boy and chow is more important

I smell a QA in that crew's near future.

Does that type of sht happen often out there? I've got to imagine that the hospital reports that sort of thing right?

had quite possibly the most awesome experience working the ER a few days ago

a morbidly obese "residentially challenged" individual had **** himself weeks ago and didnt bother to clean up. He sat in his own shiet for weeks, literally.

he had to get cleaned up. I'm telling you, the smell was unbelievable; a mixture of feces and blood that permeated throughout the entire ER (its a big hospital too). People were walking by on the other side of the building and they could smell it. His scrotum had gotten infected to a point where it was as large as a cantelope. The infection had also affected his dink so much that it went inside his body (from the swelling). In order to get a Foley catheter in, his dink had to be "stimulated" out of his body (if u know wot i mean).

He had to be wiped down for the "visible" fungal infection as well.

    dat was not it mane

The infection had also affected his dink so much that it went inside his body (from the swelling). In order to get a Foley catheter in, his dink had to be "stimulated" out of his body (if u know wot i mean).

He had to be wiped down for the "visible" fungal infection as well.

    dat was not it mane
That's bananas, for some reason I just pictured the fat dude in the movie " Seven" when I was reading your story.

Work with a newish medic who never worked with me before. I warn him that on Sundays I work I usually get some serious trauma. He scoffs, I do not.

Last call on my Sunday was a self inflicted gsw. Somehow the guy missed his brain stem, and was alive. Saw brain matter. Visibly watched the dudes pupils blow which was a rare first. Got the dude to level 1 with a pulse despite his narrowing pressure/bradycardia, looked like he was posturing as we transferred him over to the bed. Clean/decon/smoke/go back in service.

Medic looks at me only to say "Most people pull my chain when they say they're black clouds. But next time...keep yours away from me." It was fun.

he had to get cleaned up. I'm telling you, the smell was unbelievable; a mixture of feces and blood that permeated throughout the entire ER (its a big hospital too). People were walking by on the other side of the building and they could smell it. His scrotum had gotten infected to a point where it was as large as a cantelope. Easily the worst part of working in an ER. I don't think I could ever do it. I've seen/had to put my hands on some filthy patients, but I don't think I could ever put a Foley in anybody, let alone the guy you're describing.

That's my world. Same medic with me, he was cringing when he saw the run down. 16 year old girl that ate a handful of barbiturates. Hypotensive with non purposeful movements that was actively circling the drain. Get moving quickly. Next thing I know I'm on the side of the interstate assisting the medic as he drops a tube since she quit breathing. Get her there alive.

Medic laughs saying "man, I get more tubes with you than I have in the past few months."

    Black cloud life.

im about to wrap up my EMT class. final exams in the next two weeks...couple of takeaways so far

    1. every day is a job interview. your instructor(s) will likely be in the service so call them by their title (Lieutenant, captain, etc) and try to limit how much you jake around in class
    2. stay ahead of the readings. there is a lot of material but since you're finishing up your EMR, you'll have a great base of knowledge already
    3. make the most of your ride-alongs and time in the hospital. dunt just sit around studying

lastly...enjoy. These past 3 months have flown by

    Ears open, and mouth shut.
    Ask questions.
If you don't know something, own it, and have it shown to you.
    Be aggressive and helpful.
Also don't buy raptor shears, and have a million things on your belt.
