Picked up an additional 400lbs of revolvers today for 0.85/lb. They are brand new and still have the stickers on them. It was an estate sale so I don't think the previous owner got too much use out of them.
I think I can commit to this crew now.
400lb set of the OMEZS on the rack and the brand new 400lb set of OMEZH on the floor. I don't think I need any more!
Can I be part of this crew now???

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

This seller claims these Ivanko weights were removed from San Quentin Prison in the 70s. But the plates and collars are newer than the 70s. I don't know if any part of his story is true or if the whole story is fabricated.
Weight set with new chrome Ivanko collars. This set is from San Quentin Prison. Is one of 3 "yard steel" sets. Removed in the early '70's after the riots. A piece of history.

Hmmm....never dawned on me to go with Baby Blue when I painted my set in a nontraditional color scheme....maybe I should consider that.......
OK, done considering, the answer is NO!
What were they thinking, that the blue would be easier to identify in case the plates were stolen from the prison?[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]

Ivanko mats in the LA area. I'd pick them up myself but won't be in LA for awhile unfortunately.

In the prisons I've worked at (Sing Sing, Attica, Auburn) weight areas are divided into sections referred to as 'courts'. Those courts are used, maintained by groups of inmates who come to control their court by whatever means necessary. There is some regulation by security but in some ways it's like the democracy we see in Egypt today; the people have a voice but might makes right. Courts were identified by and equipment marked by color. A court's members would be responsible for keeping their area clean and complete. If security saw a 'red' plate in the 'green' court the green court might be closed for a day or two. Or if for instance a 'baby blue' plate is found in C block after being used to put an indent in someone's head the blue court might be closed until a new group could be found to take it over.

Interesting....that's actually good information to know--I am a social worker, and I do occasionally have to go into prisons to meet with, um, "prospective clients".....I usually meet these guys in meeting rooms that have been reserved, but I have occasionally had to go directly to someone's cell. If I am understanding you correctly, knowing the color scheme could be as good for my health as knowing the gang graffiti in certain parts of town....

That's interesting, oldred.
I think the repainted Ivanko plates would have to be at least from the '80s (not the '70s) since they are marked "Ivanko". From the photos, I can't tell if they are from the 80s, 90s or 00s.
Would a prison have gone to the trouble of repainting the letters and numbers with a contrasting color??
The history (if there is any truth to it... and possibly even if there isn't any truth to it) might make them collectible... but I think I'd prefer to use gym equipment that hasn't been handled by drug users, sex offenders, etc.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #32 []---[] ()---() York Barbell Club #43 ()---() ▉---▉ Equipment Crew #50 ▉---▉

I had that exact same thought process.....I thought that 70's and early 80's era Ivankos were unbranded, and I thought the painting on the letters was odd, although it seems possible that if a prison system was ordering from Ivanko, Ivanko may have done the painting as part of the order.....and yeah, knowing some of the folks I have worked with in the past, I would DEFINITELY wash my hands after handling those plates!

Note in the picture that the paint on the Ivanko plates is the same as the bench. That identifying paint probably would have been applied by staff or inmates under the supervision of staff. The lettering could have been applied by staff, inmates under the supervision of staff or by inmates without staff being aware that they, the inmates, had even obtained the paint from who knows where. Prison culture is prison culture and it varies from jail to jail and year to year. I was a guard for twenty five years and change was drastic but as the old French proverb goes, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

Finished setting up my living room
So I have finished unpacking at my new place. Since it is smaller than my last one, I don't have any "furniture" in my living room...but I don't see the problem? Guests seem to make comment but thought you guys might appreciate it. Also, I have picked up the beauty bells to replace my bowflex select tech dumbbells which no longer suit my needs. They are quite fragile and I broke one trying to use it for a renegade move. Hopefully I can find a set of 10s, 15s and 20s somewhere. Oh and a rack.

I'm considering trading in a set of 5-45 rubber hex dumbbells (weider I believe) and paying some extra cash to get up some Ivanko 5-90 steel hex dumbbells. What do you guys think? They are in great condition (only the 20s aren't perfect) but I'm not sure they would be a big upgrade to the rubber. The Ivanko's do not have ergo handles and are not rubber. Would you still see them as an upgrade? For reference, post #12 in this thread is Ivanko talking briefly about them and showing a picture.
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...4027161&page=1
My alternative would be to buy some higher weight rubber hex dumbbells later on to supplement the set I already have.
