Demand was fairly steady but what we found was that we were paying more and more to get good quality chrome. And the quality control became a real burden. A lot of man hours devoted to checking everything. The original were beautiful, decorative chrome, and you have to pick the best castings out of that lot that you're going to chrome.

We made the decision to gradually get out of (most) chrome because you have to carry so much product, that we'd rather focus on fewer style sof plates and just carry more of them. The OMC-35's we have are still very nice examples of those early chrome plates.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a set of 35 & 45 # hex dumbells ? My gym just became another Planet Fitness victim. I bought all the hex dumbells that they had. Unfortunately the last week it was open someone swiped the 35 & 45's. The owner replaced them with a pair of rubber CAP's but I would like to get the matches for the set. I believe they are at least 25 yrs old. I would post a pic however from what I have read I don't believe I can as this is my first post. After I cleaned them up and painted them they look pretty good. I've been reading posts in here for a couple months but just registered this week. Any info would be appreciated.

A nice stack of 1.25lb O-series plates came today. Hopefully these can help me out with my sticking overhead press.
Crappy picture but you get the idea. I need to wipe down all of my plates so maybe I'll get some better pics sometime.

Yeah, they do seem pretty large for being such a light weight.

My Ivanko OM 2.5lb'ers are 6.5" diameter and the 1.25lb'ers are 5.25".

I was really getting attatched to the 2-tone of a heavily used/patina'ed Ivanko plate but the brand new finish is gorgeous in it's own way. Hmmm.. Just tell me that that these stupid little plates have not just initiated a quest to match 800lbs to a couple of tiny plates.

So a few months back I got a whole set of the O2b series plates. Painted them the rosemary hammered and painted the letters almond white. They look sweet but there was still a few imperfections in the plates. I came across on CL a set of what I believe is just the O series plate. There was no marking around the hole on the back side of the plate but they were the normal Ivanko greenish color. I painted these up and man I'm so much happier with them. So now I'm going to sell the first set and have the O series plates with no money out of pocket due to flipping.

Thanks! The white still looks somewhat like the Ivanko silver lettering but more old school if that makes sense. It's amazing what a few hours of time and patience can yield.

I think the "original" O series is discontinued. There are still a few of the O plates on in the clearance section. I think the OM series replaced them.

Thanks for your question. In short, here are major differences between the 2 plate lines. (You already brought up the most significant differences).


RE: OM (Olympic, machined) Series. They're machined on almost all surfaces, of course. But the hole on both grades of plate are machined, so they'll fit on the bar the same, but the OM series might rest plate to plate a little better. Probably not a huge difference, but enough for some to want that difference.

The OM series features a better quality casting all around than the 02B (Olympic, second-grade, black). Minor (and many would say insignificant) defects in the casting of an O2B plate are touched-up. Sometimes those the castings that make the grade for the 02B series would be rejected for the OM series.

Weight accuracy might be just a little better in the OM series than the 02B. (I believe I went over this a little bit more on the "superior plate" thread). In fairness to other manufacturers, I believe that some have made great strides in the quality of their cast-iron plates. You couldn't have said that 15 years ago.
