It amazes me that you are still researching this, and "planning" to build a bar yourself, yet have such a hard time with such a simple concept...

The bushing obviously doesn't run the entire length of the sleeve, so wouldn't it be a safe assumption that the black space behind the bushing would be the inside edge of that bushing? Look at the picture of the bar with the sleeve taken off again, see the markings where the bushings spin on the inner and outer edges of the sleeve?

I'm tempted to even tell you about the "floating" bushing some manufacturers use between the two outer bushings, but I'd hate for your head to explode from so much added confusion.

I like your sense of humor. Yes I know the bushing doesn't run the entire length of the bar. Especially since the entire point is to reduce friction here. Also did you see the picture of the naked bar I posted with the arrow pointing to the part where the bushing has worn off the bar coating? As for the floating bushings, yes I have seen those. Not between two outer bushings though. In fact The cap OB86 bar uses a floating bushing as the outer bushing.

Now coming back to business, the inside edge of the bushing looks fishy (the whole point of my post). From the pictures, the inside edge looks like a "step up" (see how the light reflects off the "inside edge" in the first pic). If an ant were to enter the sleeve, it could walk the entire length of the bushing and then when it encountered the black edge, it would have to step up (lol!). At least that's what it looks from the picture.

I must say here that this has nothing to do with me building a bar, just that these pictures appear confusing.

I see no "step" in any picture except the last one of the Pendlay sleeve, and that is because there doesn't appear to be a bushing in the sleeve...

Thanks for confirming that. Here's a pic of a cut out section of a 3d model I had made earlier.

Now that you know how your barbell is made, stop derailing the Ivanko thread. I keep checking to see what others are talking about their Ivanko gear only to see a bunch of post about you trying to build a bar.

Hint: Start your own thread if it has zero to do with the thread topic.

Anybody own an Ivanko OB-28? I'm picking up some plates this week and the guy says he has an older Ivanko bar too. His photo doesn't show much of the bar, but I think I've narrowed it down to the OB-28C. It's definitely one of their "economy" bars, but do you guys think it is worth $100? I don't need it but may sell it to a friend who has a cheap junk chrome bar at the moment. I'm assuming the OB-28 would be better than your standard cheap chrome CAP bar, right?

It sold for $220 brand new. They're basically beater bars. Personally, I think I'd rather throw $20 in and just get an OB-86B.

I have an older Ivanko enconomy bar with a slight bend that I bought for $20. For that price it is a great bar. But I still prefer my Cap OB-86B that cost me $130 new.

I would get your friend a Cap OB-86B instead of a used economy bar.

Very good advice. Thanks. I think the "Ivanko" name thing was clouding my judgement. Maaaybe if he throws it in for $20 I'll take it.

I just got my collars in, not too impressed with the COC-2.5KG finish. Maybe I'm being picky but the chrome has spots that look like copper showing through. Is this normal? These were bought new and drop shipped from Ivanko.

Upper left corner is one of the spots, there are a few more blemishes on the other flats.

I don't think you are being picky. They shouldn't be like that.

I´ve got some COT2.5 and they have similar pitting (although much less than yours) and they even had a dent/large pit hole which was on there from manufacture imo … so much for quality control. I would have sent them back normally but I am in Europe and they were extremely difficult to get hold of without waiting 4 months for direct delivery from IVANKO - They were a disappointment, but one consolidation was that they were on sale so I got them at a good price. They are the only disappointing kit I own from IVANKO, everything else I have is top notch.

On a side note, my COT2.5 have CHINA stamped on them in massive letters, I really didn´t see the point of that and it annoyed me. I would sell them if someone was interested in buying them but there is zero second hand market here, I rarely use them.

Decorative chrome is usually plated over nickel. You might see nickel but probably not brass. IMHO decorative chrome is a terrible choice for a finish despite its popularity. My first choice would be stainless steel. Anodized aluminum might work also. I'd even prefer paint since at least it's easy to refinish.

Today I got my 2nd and third sets of the discontinued black oxide collars. It took me a while to find more. Although black oxide will wear off, there's nothing to chip or peel. And if it does wear off, then you're left with beautiful bare steel.

All chrome will chip and peel eventually. Below are some photos of vintage Eleiko collars with worn out chrome. I've also seen newer Eleiko collars that were beat up bad also. IMHO, decorative chrome is best left for the cheap stuff. Ivanko used to have a warning on their website that chrome would chip and peel. I'm not sure if it's still up or not.

How about hard chrome plating that some use? Good or bad? Will it peel and chip as well?

I would have sent them back normally but I am in Europe and they were extremely difficult to get hold of without waiting 4 months for direct delivery from IVANKO - They were a disappointment, but one consolidation was that they were on sale so I got them at a good price. They are the only disappointing kit I own from IVANKO, everything else I have is top notch.

On a side note, my COT2.5 have CHINA stamped on them in massive letters, I really didn´t see the point of that and it annoyed me. I would sell them if someone was interested in buying them but there is zero second hand market here, I rarely use them.
Mine have some dents/pits on one side also, not what I thouht should come on collars that cost this much. If they were at least made in the USA I think we would not see these issues. Outsourcing to make a few extra bucks is never a good business model, quality over quantity. I guess I should of looked at eleiko since they make LBS and KG and I would hope they have better quality control. I'm about to move so getting a better pair is probably out of the question even though I'm a few hours away from Ivanko.

There is different quality among hard chromes as well as decorative chromes. Iirc, hard chrome is usually not plated over nickel and less prone too chipping or peeling but I think it still can. ...all this is off the top of my head... iirc it's usually less rust resistant.

Personally, I can't stand decorative chrome at all. Period. I hate the stuff. I wish Ivanko would stop using it entirely but it's what people demand. I also have turned down used Eleiko bars on Craigslist because they like to slather everything with chrome. It's a shame. I'm tolerant of some of the hard chrome. I've had good experiences with hard chrome on some dumbbell handles and specialty bars.

With collars, I think the top of the line should be stainless. ....maybe training collars and gym collars in anodized aluminum (like the Bulldog colllars)... and cheapos in decorative chrome.

I have a pair of COX-C collars and the chrome is excellent and not peeling at all, but some of my OMC plates are peeling a little, more so with the 10s and others are holding up great. One of my 35 was plated a little thin and I can see some copper, or nickel showing through, a bummer. I do think as Ivanko side that the OMC plates wouldn't be a good thing in a commercial gym. You just can bang them around and expect the chrome to hold up.

I wonder how Eleiko bars hold up. At their pricing the chrome should never fail for home use.

Stainless collars not a good idea. Stainless threads tend to gall unless the proper lube is used and applied on a regular basis. Unless someone would build stainless COX collars with steel inserts on the thread parts.

I can only tell you what I've seen and from what I've seen Eleiko decorative chrome doesn't hold up any better than Ivanko decorative chrome. Eleiko seems to be put up on a pedestal and my own impression is that it's mostly hype... but then again, I'm not an olympic lifter. I've turned down every single modern piece of Eleiko that I've found on Craigslist because the chrome was peeling and the price was sky high.

Thanks for the info about the problem with using stainless. I didn't know. I'm willing to use lube regularly and liberally.

I thought the OMC plates were triple chrome plated but I don't remember for sure. I'd need to look it up.

Triple chrome plating is decorative plating, copper, nickle, chrome. Eleiko use hard chrome plating which is only chrome.

Have the Eleiko bars always been hard chrome or is some of it decorative chrome? On the collars too? ... and the plates? I'm definitely not a chrome expert.

My original COT-1 1/4B collars (on the left) and the two used pairs that I picked up today. I think all 3 pairs are made in the USA.

    Thanks, Joe.

Here are some Ivanko spinlocks. I'm still looking for the wedge lock collars (preferably not in chrome ) that were discontinued around 2008 iirc.

The photo also shows three of the main paint colors that they used over the years.

Hey guys what's going on in here? Anyone have a pair of unbranded 25s they'd sell or trade?

Can someone post a pic of these wedge collars?

Whatever it is, I can say that I've seen it chipped and peeled on the sleeves.... mostly at the edges. The shafts were in good condition except where they were racked and there was some chrome damage. The chrome plates and collars that I've seen have also chipped and peeled. Some of the chipped plates were the new ones. Don't get me wrong. The chrome from Ivanko and Eleiko is MUCH better than on the cheap stuff. I just don't think it's a good choice for something that will have heavy wear. It'll probably last much longer in a home environment than in a commercial environment but it will chip and peel eventually.

I think hard chrome can be bright or satin in finish. For whatever reason (maybe just chance), I've had better luck with satin hard chrome.

I pulled some photos of Eleiko chrome from the web. I'm not trying to say Eleiko is bad and that Ivanko is good. I just think the obvious conclusion is that chrome is the work of the devil. I know a lot folks like chrome and that's fine.

I think this is probably the worst case scenario. I suspect this Eleiko bar was neglected.

I think this is probably more representative of an Eleiko bar that was used but not abused. It's in pretty good condition but you can definitely see some wear.

Here's a newer condition Eleiko bar with some dark discoloration.

And here's an Eleiko bumper plate with some flaking and bubbling chrome plating.
