I just bought Dream Tan #1 for my two upcoming competitions and i wanted to know if it was necessary to have a base tan applied prior to putting on dream tan(such as a few coats of protan)?

Base tan needed for dream tan?

I appreciate the insight guys. I plan on applying DT before i get to the venue. I already bought 2 bottles of #1 so ill have to suck it up. Is #2 really that much better?

I agree that I like to have a bit of a base tan as well but it's more a mental thing. Are you using anything under the DT1? I suggest using protan under it. It will mean you can us a lighter coating of DT so it will look more natural since DT is more of a lighter orange and DT1 is more of a darker gold.
Don't worry about it being DT1 over DT2. I agree that if I had to choose I would use DT2 but I've used DT1 and had great colour. There are 3 tricks to making it look nice.
1) Use a base like protan
2) Use a light/med coat of DT1 and slap it into the skin hard! when applying
3) Use a makeup pad and apply a very light coat to your face. If you get the face to dark with DT1 it makes the entire tan look horrible and that's when you look like a statue busker. My $0.02 is worth $0.03

I use pro tan as a base but I am about as white as one gets. I usually mix my dream tan with Pam cooking spray so it lays down nicely without chalking or clumping. And i mix it with lotion when applying it to my face. My avi is taken with #2 following this protocol.

I have always used #1, but most times they do say to use #2. #1 is a Gold Bronze, and I find it goes on just like a dark California kinda tan would on me. #2 is Red Bronze. Now, I have seen competitors up on stage that are GOLD, like yellow, but that is NOT the color of Dream Tan #1. Also, if you use Dream Tan, remember is does NOT DRY and you can't coat it. Dont 'oil up' with it or you will find yourself making swirlies, lol. I've seen that many times. Use PAM and lightly spray overall and pat down if needed. Yes, it is being outlawed in the NPC. At major shows they will do a 'Wipe Test" and if your color wipes off, you need to take it off or be disqualified as it gets all over the venue. I am, after many years, giving up my beloved gold bronze. Good luck!
