What are some basic Clean and Jerk tips to give to a new lifter?

If one of your friends were brand new to the sport, what are the basics you would drill into him first?

Not sure how well I do it normally, but I read that when you're setting up for the clean you should kind of turn your elbows towards each other(away from the body) to help keep it close to you during the pull. Is that legit advice?

I don't understand what you're describing, BUT you should be pointing your elbows out to the sides along the length of the bar (don't get extreme with this though) instead of pointing behind you.
