Do they teach geography in America? (srs)

Serious question and no offence intended. But why is it that 50% of all Americans i meet whether in real life or on the web struggle to locate even some of the most popular countries?


Just read a thread on something that happened in Pakistan and people were talking about the middle east lol?

i honestly can't point out chit on a map and have the worst sense of geography. true story.
i can tell you where anything in diablo 2 is though

Eh, it's one country off (Iran is usually considered the eastern edge of the ME) -- not far enough off that you should start a thread about it.

To answer your question: yes, most of us take some sort of geography lessons while in elementary school.

hmm nah, never really took a geography class. we had classes that maybe covered some geography, but nothing directing aimed at it.

Yes, we do. Unfortunately, as with most elementary and middle school classes, the teachers are barely functioning babysitters and you basically just color sheets of paper without retaining anything of value. If it weren't for international econ classes in Uni I'd be clueless, too.

Americans don't really do any form of compulsory geography class because the only country of any importance to them is their own.

Those are states and New York is a City so that doesn't really count, it's like me asking you where Middlesex is in England and to locate Bolton.

edit: but not knowing where cuba is, is pretty dumb.

I had a girl in my Junior American History Class in HS not know where Germany was. But what was worse is she took a stab in the dark and pointed at England.

Though to be fair i know plenty of Canadian/European people who can't point out a single State in the US on a map. brb don't know where Cali/New York/Texas or any other states are.

And our states are the size of a lot of european countries so it's only fair. Though i can still point out a few of the cities like London, Paris, Berlin and sh*t.

The "Middle East" is a completely arbitrary designation. Pakistan and Afghanistan are both Muslim countries that border on Iran -- saying that Pakistan is in the ME is not a completely ridiculous statement.

"Middle East" isn't really a cut and dried distinction like a continent. In fact, the G8 distinction of the "Greater Middle East" does include Pakistan. Either way, it's a) part of the main bloc of the Muslim World, b) a complete sh!thole like the vast majority of the Muslim World, and c) OP is a *******.

I took geography in middle school, but I have a good memory so I could draw a map of the world without even looking at any references.

The reason no one in American knows where all these countries are is because they're chit holes and no one gives a fuk about your poverty nations.
