Thanks for the res,
Here in Japan, when I was a teenager (1970s) , only fantasy book available in Japanese translation was LOTR(The Lord of the Rings). In Japanese, the book was titled *yubiwa monogatari* (Story of the rings). Those days, "The hobbit" was regarded by many as a children's book. I was into Sci-fi at that time, so I never read them as a teenager.
When my wife got pregnant she was 30 and I was 29 (1988). She almost had a miscarriage. So we often stayed at home and started playing video games. Years later, I was hooked on PC games such as Wizardry (1990-1995), Diablo I&II (1997, 2000), Might & Magic (1990-2000). I'd been learning English and playing those games helped my English a lot. I joined one of the game guilds and one member posted at its forum recommending "The Crystal Shard". I read it and finally I knew why many people play barbarians named their character like "Wulfgar ###". After that I was hooked on those books and I was able to stop playing PC games. I have read a lot of books, but none of them has vivid fighting scenes like this series.
A few years later (2001-2003), I watched Peter Jackson's film and finally read LOTR. And I picked my username "Samraiwise" after "Samwise Gamgee".
Sorry about the TMI.🌺 Lauren Brooks Kelly (snailsrus) - Jul 25, 1991 – Jan 29, 2022

I just started Age of Myth, so far so good with it. Seems to be a good setup. It's set a few thousand years before Riyria. There is the first 3 of the series out and I've just seen the author post about the future release dates for books 4-6.
Age of Legend - April 2019
Age of Death - October 2019
Age of Empyre - April 2020
So you at least know you'll get it finished in the near future. The writing is already finished.

I'm currently on book 1 of the traitor son cycle (The Red Knight), enjoying the fuk out of it so far even tho the chapters are short and alternate characters like a motherfukker.
Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.
Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.
It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.
The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job. The abby is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.
Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war...**#3 always delivers crew**

Anyone feel like the epic fantasy popularity that Game of Thrones bought when the show first got big has disappeared a bit?
Remember a few years ago we would be posting in this thread every other month about a new epic fantasy series starting. Definitely not a bad thing that it has slowed down as it was getting a bit over saturated and there were some poor money grabbing ones out there, but now I feel like we barely get any!1977

Maybe, but I was the one usually posting new ones as I go over goodreads at least twice a month maybe when looking for a new book to start and just haven't found much recently to post about.
And TNOTW are amazing books, but my dislike for Rothfuss is making me hate them. I need to stop following him on ******** because he always posts some ratty side project and it pisses me off1977

How did you find it? I got about 1/3 of the way through before I dropped it but its reviews are all pretty high. This one about sums up my issue with it:
"In the end, my main issue with City of Lies was its pacing. At times, it would read like a tensely wrought thriller, while at others, the plot slowed to a crawl. The book also struggled to maintain its air of mystery—though, to be fair, when this atmosphere was present, the story practically oozed a rich and almost cinematic quality. But perhaps what bothered me the most about reading this was this frustrating sense of stop-and-go, since I found it difficult to work up my enthusiasm for the story and characters every time the plot lost its momentum. I also wouldn’t exactly call this one an action-oriented novel, with its heavy focus on cloak-and-dagger elements which proved to be a double-edged sword. Keep in mind Jovan and Kalina weren’t really trained to be fighters; instead, they were taught to be observant, to memorize crucial information, and to charm and manipulate opponents rather than to attack them with physical force. While it was refreshing to read about protagonists who rely predominantly on more clandestine tactics, occasionally it could get a bit tedious watching them spin their wheels."
On another note, I just read King of Ashes by Raymond E. Feist and enjoyed it. Would recommend/10."Have faith in the Lord Fifth, gain eternal life! When the Lord Fifth appears, who dares to cause strife!"
"Heyyy. Hi there! Hello! Im Lord Third. Let me tell you something, do you know how high I can count? I can count to three"
Little Haowie, dont you worry, it said, eyes shining brightly. My dream is that, upon entering the Black Lands, there will be people there shouting the name of Lord Fifth. Then, my two great armies will join together to become like my wings!

Just checked and I got 52% into it and gave up. I'd agree with what you've quoted. I don't mind slow moving fantasy or one without much action, but for that to work you have to have good writing/prose and great characters, this just didn't have it.
The main brother and sister had their defects to make them more interesting but it just wasn't doing it for me.1977

Most recent reads that I would recommend to all here
The Lightbringer Novels by Brent Weeks - not a bad read - unique magic system.
Brian McClallans Powder Mage Series, its a good Flintlock Fantasy.
Locke Lamoria Series, I see people compare these to a high fantasy Oceans 11, that just doesn't do this series justice - magic is rarier in this series and the MC is super cleaver I would recommend reading the 3 books that are currently out.
Jim Butchers Dresden - which I am sure most of you have read also I like his Codex Alera, Jim got bet to write a fantasy pokemon series and here was the outcome its good enough if you need something to read."Inside... Something... Doesn't feel right...
Maybe... Because... I'm rotting"

Ive read all of those! Lightbringer i think is pretty damn good. I HATED Kip the first 3 books, but he finally got cool in the last 2. Hopefully the trend continues haha.
Dude, i was feeling the same way, but there is such a drought in the fantasy world right now that i pre-ordered lmao.
I go through about 1 book a week, so i burnt through all the good ones ages ago.
Hoping 2019 yields better results haha.Goodbye fried rice, hello fried chicken!
