I didn't like Oathbringer nowhere near as much as I would have liked which is pretty disappointing.
My issues
Spoiler!
This is genuinely the only Brandon Sanderson series I've managed to read past the first book - getting worried I'll end up getting turned away from this series before the 10th one is out. Which would be chit because he's the only author that actually puts his books out in good time. At the moment I don't even know how he will stretch this to 10 books.
The more I think about the book the more I feel it has everything I dislike about Brandon Sanderson books. This brah is really crap at writing characters, and his books too plot driven.
Was no-one else a bit unimpressed with it itt?
Now that I've finished this i need something to keep me occupied until the next Red Rising book.
Anyone got any books with a badass MC, something along the lines of the the Night Angel Trilogy?Last edited by NasStan; 01-06-2018 at 06:39 PM.

Haven't read Sanderson yet but I felt the same with Abercrombie's First Law trilogy. Couldn't give a fuk about anyone except Glokta.
if a genie gave me 3 wishes I'd ask for sequels from Scott Lynch, GRRM and Pat Rothfuss. Those 3 fukkers will kill me with their delaysWhen it all comes down

With Abercrombie that was sort of the point, all the characters were such deeply flawed shades of grey that only really Glotka and Dogman are truly decent people. The entire intent of the series was to make you look at OTHER works from a new angle.... like... Smaug was probably ****ing pissed off for good reason.

He's so overrated for me, srs
Have read Bloodsong and the second one unfortunately.
Looking at Shadowdance, I read a Dance of Cloaks in 2013 and gave it 4 stars which is quite a lot for me so I must have enjoyed it. Looked at the sequel A Dance of Blades on my e-reader and I was 70% of the way through it but never finished it, how odd. Will look into it, have no idea why I would stop so far in.
Any other suggestions welcome boyos. I'll be flying at least 10 times for work this month so need to stack up on some books.1977

Got a few credits from Audible to spend. I read while listening to the audibles.
Any opinions on:
Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie.
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.
Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence.
Heard of Prince of Thorn being brutal but good and the main character being an ******* but likable. Nothing on the others but from the reviews they look legit. Not really fussy on any specifics but one thing i do prefer is not too many POV's. At most stuff like Stormlight Archive or the Witcher's multiple POV.

I really like the series that begins with Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastards). Really only 1 main POV. The main characters are professional con-artists...like fantasy Robin Hood stealing from the rich. Lamora is a smart ass and its written pretty witty.
Blade Itself has multiple POVs but its not too many. much darker and grittier than Lamora but a good series also.
Both are good series.
I read Prince of Thorns but I don't remember much about that series.Stern Crew

Tried all 3. For a good trilogy I liked Prince of Thorns books all the way through to the end of the last one. All three were good.
Lies of Locke Lamora... first book is probably better than all Thorns books, second is pretty good, third it gets boring. Not sure I'm gonna continue with that series if/when it continues.
Started Blade itself and just sort of stopped reading towards the end. Didn't really capture me personally.Lifts:

I would read Lies of Locke Lamora first. I think it has a very good way of drawing you into the world and just seemed like a well written story. By the end of the third book the deals were a little repetitive but overall it was very good. The author must have watched Iron Chef or other exotic cooking shows with the way he describes the food. Not in a bad way, but it was interesting compared to how little is written about food in other books. This technique is just one way it helps to draw you into the world.
The Blade Itself would be second. A complete change of pace compared to many of the fantasy books in that the author has no problem showing screwed up situations and characters. I don't know if he intended it that way or not, but Glokta ends up being one of the better characters. How often do you have a character yell out to a servant, "XYZ, I shizzz myself again!"
The Prince of Thorns was good and pretty raw as well. The main character is pretty much an axx but does grow or develop. I started another series by Mark Lawrence set at the same time and in the same universe called "Prince of Lies" but stopped reading half way through the second book. That main character was a whiny little bastich and never grew up.Yeah, I'm old, been here for years before posting. Son posts as well.

To anyone interested in fantasy series, I highly recommend the The Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe. It is an experience like no other, a series you will want to read again and again and get something new out of it each time. It is seriously mind boggling that a human being could come up with something so intricate and beautiful. George RR Martin ranks him as the best sci-fi/fantasy writer of the past century.

Currently about 200 pages into Tower Lord and I'm still enjoying this series. I get the gripes about the POV changes but ffs, I was expecting a pile of dogsh!t judging by this thread. Either the book gets drastically worse, or you brahs have been too harsh.

way of kings was a mediocre book at best, i skipped all the shallan chapters. 500 pages into words of radiance now and holy chit, this book is fuarking good.
sanderson's writing is so freaking bad though. like seriously bad. a villain gets his plan spoiled and says "It can't be!". that made me cringe so hard, how can you be such a chit writer at clutch moments? rothfuss's books are flawless in that regard. sanderson books have good plots with chit prose as far as i've gathered.to the best!
