I used, and continue to use 500mg of slow niacin four times a day and it has worked well. Niacin is a B vitamin.
    Do what's right.

Genetics definitely plays a part in high cholesterol, but docs are so quick to prescribe drugs -- probably because the average American is unwilling to take proper care of him/herself. Since you're into bodybuilding, you're likely an exception, so check everything about your diet. Trans fats are the worst (partially hydrogenated oils), followed by saturated fat, and perhaps dietary cholesterol. But sugars and simple carbs also have been shown to have detrimental effects on your blood profile. ----- To answer your question, whey protein is not going to hurt you, but be careful of other dairy unless it's nonfat ('low-fat" actually contains a fair amount of saturated fat).

Dietary cholesterol has little effect upon blood cholesterol. Industrial trans fats are bad for you but natural trans fats are fine. There's nothing wrong with saturated fats. Sugars and simple carbs are also fine in moderation like everything else. Dairy is fine also. OP should listen to his doctor.

some useless information: Statins (cholesterol medication) and Ruby Grapefruit or its juice should no longer be taken together, or at all really, something about a bad enzyme produced by or in the liver.....
Also, cholesterol medication leaches out the Co-Enzyme Q10 from the body, so if you are on a high dose of medication, take a good source of Q10, regarded as the sparkplug of the body.

LOL there's a pill for everything these days. Even to fix the damage from the previous pill.

Take all the whey you want as long as you start losing weight.

It is my belief that Cholesterol is not bad for you (in your food or your blood) and that statins will cause you muscle damage (and pain) and will also damage your nervous system including your brain and will just generally age you.

If you are male and in your 40s statins will lower you heart attack risk by an insignificant amount (0.5% per year absolute or something) while bumping up your cancer risk a similar amount for no overall change in mortality. If you are female any age or past your 40s they don't do **** (well not good **** just bad ****).

Your doctor will explain your muscle pains and nervous system deterioration as general aging and you will be none the wiser (buts its the statins).

On the off chance that you want to hear more from crazy "Cholesterol is not bad for you but anti-cholesterol medication is bad for you" people, I give some links below:

I had high cholesterol when I was 300+lbs too. (And Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, SSRIs...)

It's <100 now, weight loss is the best cholesterol medicine bar none.

The Mayo Clinic offers a simple, but rather helpful guide to a heart healthy diet that will help get your cholesterol down. They assert, "Limiting how much saturated and trans fats you eat is the most important step you can take to reduce your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of coronary artery disease." There's much more here too -- much of which you've probably seen before, but it's worth a good read (at least it was worth it for me).

Good job.... I think you will be suprised how things come into line as you get you BF down, exercise more, and eat well. The body is an amazing thing and Big Pharma has everyone convinced that we need meds to correct our bodies. This is not true in majority of cases. Just simply treating yourself right, and your body will do the rest.

Give it some time and monitor how your bloodwork will change over time. This you will be amazed.

    Good luck.

and it's delicious.. I prefer lamb or calf brains though

    Love me some calf brains.

When my cholesterol test came back as "borderline", my doctor told me to reduce my carbohydrate intake.
