I injured my wrist about a year ago at wing tsun training. I was very very stupid i don't buy wrist protectors and i have very very bad hints to my wrist but its not clock in weight lifting. One of my wight training i feel a strong pain at the ulna side. I stopped the training and try to rest etc. Its not help i feel the pain i went to the city hospital.
About the first doctor: He don't deal with me he give me some medicines and say get back 3 month later.... After 3 month the pain don't went away i back to him. He told me the problem is on my head. I appeal for 5 minutes to take X-ray. He take shows nothing. He says again: Come back 3 month later.....
The second doctor is a private orthopedics doctor. HE IS A JACKASSS!!! first he told the cause my pain the motobiking(its very very interesting because i dont't have pain when i riding and driving.)He says i must stopped the riding. This time i was depressed:I musn't lift, do racket sports, and the JACKASS doctor says no ride with my new XT660.... of coursehe take medicines and PT. When its not help he says i have rheuma, arthrosis and so on. Finally he say the MILK CAUSES my pain and say i never lift again... I laugh him and I went to the firs doctor.
The firs doctor after 3 months says i have Kienböck Syndrome and order MRI. I wait for 2 month. The MRI shows nothing the doctor says I'm a stupid men and live my life without sports.
At this time I'm found out I hand specialis who deals with sportmens. I went to the best hand center in my country. The doctor was very patient and well known professor. He deal with me and says i have TFCC or other ligament injury. He says i need surgery because the non surgical treatments are failed.
I was very depressed for months because the first and second doctors don't deal with me and the not know my problem. At last August i try smoke and drink again but at 2012 january i stopped and start some legs training programs. Since february the weather is good I always ride with my XT660
So i hope my surgery will be succes and i can back to the gym at the middle of summer

7 days after post op
the surgery was a long ( 3 hours ) but the doctor's says it was easy: He did my wrist artrostcopy and he remove a little part of my tfcc and shortened the ulna to make more ROM.
after the surgery i have strong pains at the first 3 days but now its better and better. my fingers motions also better and good. The first 3 days i cant sleep but now its also better. I use painkillers twice a day. I have full cast, my the doctors says he must remove the cast 4-6 weeks after the surgery . of course i cant use my right hand. Its a little hard to do everthing with one hands.. next day i back to my school

15 days after post op…
At the school my classmates are helpfull with me an the teachers are patient.(I’m right handed and i cant write with pen etc..) about the pain: its slowly get better i can sleep 6-8 hours. The full cast is so comfortable but a hope my doctors remove 2 week later. At Monday he removed sutures its not pain free for 2 days, but now its better. I will take glucoseamin+MSM. I read some pages for this two ingredient and they write this things are good for after injury and rehab. Lets see it

also good finger and full shoulder functions. The pain can controlled by painkillers. The wires causes the pain in my wrist, they are stabbing my skin. its sometimes painfull but painkillers are useful. I take 2 tablets . In next Wednesday my doctor remove the wires and my full cast and i can start the rehab

45 days after post op.
sutures removal 2 weeks ago. its painful but i conrolled with pain killers. 1,5 week ago i start the rehab program.My physiotherapist is a very nice women. She says the first goal is the range motion after i can start with very very light weights. Now i can bend, and rotate(not full buts this time its normal and slowly get better). I do my program very seriously. I go to physiotherapist 5 time a week and do my program at home. I don't take medicines but if I have a pain while do the program after i use the old and good ICE.

I hope you recover and are able to hit the gym again. I'm about to get an MRI to check if its TFCC. I have read many times that the MRI might incorrectly tell you that its not a TFCC, but my doctor said that it will tell me certainly. I don't know what to expect. If the MRI comes out negative for TFCC then he said hes going to try a cortizone shot. The waiting game is the worst part of any medical ailment.

Yes sometimes the MRI is normal in TFCC injury.Also my MRI was negative and the doctors says the problem is not in my wrist, the problem is on my head. They are general surgeons not HAND. Finally 9 months after the injury i found a great doctor who did my surgery. I have cortonsine 3 months after the injury. Its not help for me, but I hope helps for you!
So told you should try glucoseamin+MSN for 2-3 months. If its not help I think you need surgery. Don't waste the time... You can do your everyday thinngs with damaged TFCC, but your wrist is not able to lift heavy. We are young and health up fast. I have question for you: When and how did you injured your wrist? If you answer I can give some more informations and advices!
61 days after post op.
I have full range motion. I'm able to drive a car, carry light weight things etc. I use Scitec Arthroxon and i think its helps a lot. I train my wrist four time a day.

TFCC tears may not show up on MRI's. The best way Doctors can diagnose it is by examining it and your symptoms.
I tore my TFCC bench pressing. I tried conservative treatment for 8 months, which didn't work. Finally I had arthoscopic debridement of a Partial Peripheral Tear and fraying of the ECU Sheath.
Now 4 months post up, I have full range of motion and can do my average daily living activities. I just can't lift heavy weight. But I'm in more pain now than before the surgery. The Doctor--a top hand surgeon--said it wasn't unuasal and that these things can take a long time to heal.
Friedbanana and Codered, how are you guys recovering? I will keep you updated on my status.

Same Thing there... But i don't have any pain and don't try to lift things. Daily activities are OK i can swim, ride a bike etc
The doctors opinions are diferents: My surgeon says i can start with very very light weights after 3 months. The other says it took 6-12months to heal.and so on
I decided i will start the training agion in September 6 months after post op. i starts with 4,4 pounds dumbells.. after a week with 8,8 and so on. Of course i wear some kind of wrist wraps.

Reading this is pretty depressing... I have the same problem for 10 months already.. Its on and off.. I tried letting it heal every 4 months then when i try to workout it gets worse.. Recently it was healing so good and felt like i was going to get better in a month but i tried to do exercise and now it feels bad again. I lost hope and now im waiting for my appointment with orthopedic.. I took the MRI already just waiting for results.. It feels like **** now.. i can't do much without feeling pain. Im afraid to do anything with my left wrist. I searched online about these type of injuries. Not sure if its TFCC or a UT Ligament tear. Its so complicated surgery can make it worse.. this sucks and ruined this whole year for me. i hate this..

Its been 3 months since that post. I went to one of best places in ny. First time they told me to wear a wrist splint for 3 weeks and it bothered me.. Then they tried coritsone shot and it felt so good for 4 days then wore off... Now today I got a mri done without dye...
My wrist has gotten better these past months.. max weight I can pick up with one hand is 20 lbs before some pain... Im really careful with my wrist.. I dont exercise it... I just stretch now and then...
I hope it can heal 100% by itself if I keep this up.. I feel better now but it takes a long time! Sometimes I just want to exercise it but I resist because im afraid of getting worse.. Maybe ill post again in few months

nearly 8 month post op. I build my wrist strenght up since 1,5 month. now i work with 30pound dumbel for bicep curl. My wrist is strong and stable while workout. I use heavy duty straps if i bulk the weights. Good luck with your treatment! For me the surgery was the only way. Try wrist curls...

Wow this all sounds so familiar, though I think I had a much luckier experience with the doctors than you did CodeRed!
I injured my wrist 5 months ago in boxing training. Went down the usual route of GP - physio before getting referred to an Orthropaedic specialist (who specialises in hand & wrist area).
X-ray showed nothing (except a very slight abnormality, but not one that could give the doctor a clear indication of what was wrong), manipulation of the hand by the doctor would not cause much pain, but the symptoms all clearly pointed out that something was wrong.
Specialist sent me for an MRI with arthrogram. So got the results back last week and has shown that I have a tear just at the ulnar head.
So I was given 3 options:
1 - Do nothing and hope that it heals itself
2 - Get the Cortisone injection - but was told this would only calm it down and not actually heal the tear
3 - Get an arthroscopy done (keyhole surgery) from which using the camera she can assess the injury and repair it.
Due to various commitments that we both have, I will not be able to have the surgery until February. Am happy enough with that as it gives it another 2 months to see if it will settle any by itself (though the level of pain has remained pretty constant for the past 3-4 months), and if it is still causing pain then I will have the surgery.
I didn't question the surgeon too close at the time as I was still letting the information sink in. She explained to me the procedure of the arthroscopy and said that she would try to do it keyhole, but depending on how it went she might have to open it.
She also said that I would be in a splint for a few weeks afterwards and that it would also be sore for a few weeks.
Its the rather vague "few weeks" bit that I am concerned about! I took that to mean 2-3 weeks, but from what I am reading it looks to be a bit longer! :-(
At this stage I just want it fixed!! I have not been able to do any of my normal training (as it all needs use of your hands). Have now resorted to just doing a spin class (albeit one handed!) and some running to keep the cardio up.
Any suggestions that you may have for alternative training, or tips for helping with the healing process would all be massively appreciated!!

Hello to all,
Very depressing to read all this... An specialist determine I have Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) Injure.
Depending on the place he have to stitch, the recover consist of having a plaster for 3 weeks in the better case or 6 weeks if he have to stitch using the bone... w t f....
I have continue working out using wrist support and straps.
I wish to avoid the surgery... I will try to have a second opinion.
I resist to believe I will stay a year without lifting...

Wow guys.. Yes, this is very depressing!
I found out recently I have TFCC as well.. For months (since late 2014), I would have pain on the ulna side of my right wrist when doing curls. I ignored it and thought it was a sprain or tendinitis. It finally got the point in April 2015 when I couldn't lift a 20 lb. dumbbell without severe pain. After an MRI, it was confirmed I have TFCC.
I'm still waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic where I live. In the meantime, I can't lift any weights and I've had some depression symptoms. I do cardio and machine leg exercises, but that's about it.
For those who have had the surgery, you said your fingers were free to move while wearing a cast. Were you able to use your affected hand in daily activities (cooking, brushing your teeth, buttoning clothes)? Were you able to shower or no?
I've never had a cast on or a severe injury, so I don't know what to expect. Any insight would be very helpful. Trying to stay positive!

This all sounds so familiar. I tore my TFC lifting in November. I tried to let the injury heal without treatment, but after 7 months there was no change. I had the arthroscopic procedure done on June 11, after which I was in a post-op splint for 2 weeks. I'm now in a full arm cast until July 27. When the post-op splint was removed, I was mortified to see how much atrophe had already taken place. I am freaking out now! I worked my ass off to get where I was and to think it could be 6 months before I can lift again is very depressing!! I almost wish I had skipped the operation and just dealt with the pain. Do you guys think the procedure was worth it in the end?

I injured my TFCCs (left more severely than right) slowly by slowly during the month of may this year with heavy upright rows. Within three weeks, the pain had become so bad that I couldn't lift even 5 pounds with the left hand without significant pain. The right hand doesn't hurt nearly that bad, but still, is a bother. I went and saw a doctor, who told me to wear a splint on the left hand for 4 weeks and then come back for a follow up. He also told me to stop lifting permanently (I lol'd).
Been resting for 3 weeks now. And I'm not really sure if its getting better. The left wrist sits in the cast, but I can still feel pain when I have to use it... for pulling up jeans or socks, for example.
The right one, if I rest, I'm pain free but I have sharp pain when I try to rotate my wrist. And If I'm somewhat active with this wrist, I dont have a sharp pain but a dull ache.
I will see that doc in a week and I'm most certainly going to see a hand specialist after that.
Haven't worked out in almost 6 weeks now.. lost 6 pounds. What's even funnier is that I sprained my ankle when I went running 3 weeks back... so cant even do cardio or legs.
Like most of you, I also felt frustrated and depressed... but It's getting better. Over the past week I have made peace with the fact that I may not be able to lift heavy ever again. Its better than to not be able to lift anything at all, right?
What I feel from reading all your stories is that you need a lot of luck to get through this (and to find a good doc).
I'll update you on what happens..

My story
Sorry to hear about all ur injuries!
It was about 6 months ago when I injured my TFCC (self diagnosis after internet research). You as well as I know that this is one of the most nagging injuries around. In my experience i injured it while lifting 35 lb dumbells for a shoulder exercise at the gym. I felt something pull in the ulnar side of my wrist and didnt think too much of it at the time. I carried on with that workout with a bit of pain but not enough to stop me from lifting. The next few days i still felt it and thought maybe it was just a muscle there and that i needed to give it time to heal a bit but it just never went away. The thing is that when i was lifting and my wrist was locked i didnt notice it at all no matter how much i was benching or curling or whatever. It was just on certain motions that i would feel the nagging pain that wouldnt go away. I wore a wrist brace for about 2 weeks but got bothered with it cause id still have some good days and bad days.
So after about 3 months i decided of this nagging pain that never subsided i decided i would go to a doctor. He said that he studied in sports medicine and was well versed in injuries of the wrist and hand. I told him about my symptoms and he gave me some strength tests and utlimately decided that i had a TFCC injury... Thanks to the research i did on my own i already knew this. So he took me for xrays and they came up negative, no structural damage in my wrist at all. This was good news but now the doctor had 2 options for me. Either to give me a cortisone shot and hope it goes away or continue wearing a wrist guard and hope it goes away. Both options he said if the paid didnt go away in 4 weeks to come back and id get an mri and maybe surgery which i am not down with. I chose the cortisone shot in hopes the pain would go away.
Surprise, surprise. Lol the pain did not go away! I went 3 days being pain free and then the weird thing about it was that after the shot the pain kind of shifted to different movements that hurt me when i pronated (flip wrist over) and when i put pressure on the ball of my wrist. I decided after 4 weeks that instead of going back to see this doctor that i thought was FOS I would try my chiropractor instead. My chiropractor did not diagnose my wrist injury as a tfcc tear but he did say i might have ligament damage in my wrist. The main thing that he thinks caused the problem is an injury that is stemming from my shoulder/neck area. This sounds alittle funky but the more i thought of it my right shoulder, the one of the tffc side has always given me problems, so this could be true. I was wondering if any of you guys maybe had shoulder injuries too on the same side of the wrist your tfcc injury is on????
So anyways, i have been getting treatment from him for the last 2 months and i am actually seeing progress!!! They have been using microcurrent stim on my wrist where the injury is, then i get a massage on my right arm(once a week to avoid high copay) and then they use kinesiology therapy taping on my wrist!! The kinesio tape is what i really think does the trick. I have seen so much improvement almost to the point where i am at full health on my right wrist. The kinesio tape is basically an ace bandage that sticks to your skin. It apparently microcopically lifts the skin that is taped which in turn draws blood to the area and sends necessary injury healing properties to the area i believe. My info might not be completely right so feel free to look it up! But anyway the more massages i got i felt my forearm loosen up and the ulnar side of my wrist has started to feel better to where i can almost pronate pain free. Id start to feel around in your forearm and see if you could find any pressure points that might relieve pain. Anyway ill try and keep you updated to let you know how im feeling in a few weeks and if i actually fully heal and if i do what my next step is whether it be PT or some kind of home recovery to get the strenght in my wrist back up. I really miss the gym

Thank you for the reply! I actually had an MRI and that's where it was diagnosed as TFCC. Like you, I didn't want surgery so I saw my chiropractor. He did some massage on the area and showed me some exercises to do. From what I ready, this wouldn't work since there was an actual tear, but I tried them anyway and there was no improvement over several weeks. I finally saw a wrist surgeon (took a couple months to get an appointment) who examined my wrist and gave me two options: cortisone injection or surgery. I took the cortisone. The idea is that the cortisone should decrease the inflammation and not cause the pain. It won't repair the tear, but many people have tears in their wrists without pain. He advised me not to workout for a week after the injection and to start back slowly (what's one additional week after just doing cardio and machine leg exercises for five months). I started back one week after the injection using 15 and 20lb dumbbells for chest presses, curls, tricep kickbacks, back rows. He advised to stick with dumbbells for a while and to use wrist wraps for all exercises.
Four months later (now), I would say the pain is about 80% better, which is great. I wear wrist wraps all the time when working out, regardless of how much weight, and I'm almost back to where I was when I had to stop. I still have some problems with skull crushers and doing some other at-home basic tasks (e.g. shaking a bottle, shaking someone's hand, pumping soap, etc.) so I try to use my left hand when possible.
I saw the surgeon again last week for a follow-up. I asked for another cortisone injection to see if I could improve my wrist (it hasn't gotten worse, but would like it to get to 90 - 95% better if possible). He was fine with it so I got another one. We'll see how it goes. He said that it's very possible that the pain could come back at any time and that I still need to watch my movements. I wear a wrist brace at night when I sleep since I tend to toss and turn and don't want to put my wrist in an awkward position.
I am thrilled, needless to say. I hope it continues as I do not want surgery! Surgery will most likely not heal it 100% back to normal, and will require 4 - 6 weeks of rehab.

I've been using "THP Powerlifting Wrist Wraps (18 inch length)" for about five months now. They're pretty good. I find myself re-adjusting them throughout my gym session, usually because I wrap too tightly and my hand starts turn colors and go numb. I just want to be sure they're not too loose and I re-injure myself.
