after doing a bunch of research on whether it was bull**** or not, i started meditating a few weeks ago. honestly, i can say that mentally/emotionally i have never felt better.
if you look around there are plenty of ways to meditate. you don't technically need music but this my personal routine, can go anywhere from 30min-1hr:
>i sit with my eyes closed and listen to a theta wave pattern for 10-20 minutes (posted below)
while i do this i just clear my thoughts completely and remain focused on breathing, breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.
here's what i usually listen to (you need stereo headphones):
-i will make another post in here about this. but basically its called a theta wave, and when you hear it the sound synchronizes with the waves produced by your brain to relax you and increase focus:
http://gethighnow.com/theta-wave-brain-synchronization/
>after i listen to the waves, i follow this 10min guided meditation (geared towards students):
http://www.fragrantheart.com/cms/fre...n-for-studying
>at that point i'm in a super-relaxed state and i'll usually listen to some music that has embedded frequencies, these are some epic ones especially the 2nd:
if you did it right, you will feel like you just ripped a bong and get a huge rush of positive endorphins from listening to the music.. no better way to start your day.
a couple months ago, i noticed i had developed a case of nerves/anxiety (heart would beat fast in social situations, couldn't talk smoothly, etc) as a result of adhd meds.. i know it was the meds because i was NEVER like that before. when i would go out in public, my brain would just go into overdrive and i would overthink things and become mentally distressed. meditating has reduced all of that to zero, to the point where i can walk up to random girls on the street and start a convo and be completely relaxed about it.
meditation teaches you to separate yourself from your emotions and be in complete control of your life. for most people life is like a roller coaster.. something "bad" happens to them they feel ****ty, something "good" happens to them they get happy and optimistic again. when you meditate, you realize how ridiculous that is. your emotions and feelings, actually mean nothing. YOU are the one who decides how you feel, no outside influence can actually change your emotional state. if you want to not care about something, literally all you have to do is tell yourself not to care and then just go about your day. my emotions went from being a cloud over me that decided how i would feel, to a little ball of playdough in my hand.
for people who complain that meditation is too long, boring, etc.. the fact that you do not have the willpower to sit still for 10-20 minutes a day is exactly why you will never accomplish anything in life.

Good shiet, its one of the best things you can do for yourself.
It can be really hard to do consistently when your just starting out, just seems weird and you always find something else to do.
But just 20 minutes a day can really change your life.
I'm into mindfulness, you don't try to sit there 100% quiet and get pissed when thoughts or emotions come in... I just sit there. observe these things, accept them, then they pass. Over time you get better at noticing and accepting them, which makes every day life so much better not letting thoughts or emotions run your life.Last edited by pwoL; 03-27-2012 at 09:33 PM.

100% exactly how i've approached it.
when you first start, a ton of random thoughts will come into your head as soon as you close your eyes. the trick is to let them come, acknowledge them, and then just let them float away.
Bruce Lee used to say "be like water", or in other words just let your thoughts/emotions flow through you.
for example if a thought comes in my head like "dude, you have a problem set to do.. this is retarded" i'll just repeat it to myself like " 'this is retarded'.. hmm thats an interesting thought... okay".. basically just be completely chill about everything, i examine each thought as if it is some abstract object, just a spurious creation of the random neural connections in my head (which is really all it is). after a few sessions, it gets much easier. i've only been doing this a few weeks and i'm at the point where i can sit completely still for close to an hour and have my mind be completely blank.
once you realize that your thoughts and emotions are random and have no bearing on you whatsoever, it just gives you this insane feeling of personal control and self-efficacy.Meditation is the sh*t (srs) (no hippy) (strong informative thread):

Subbed this thread is this sh*t
Currently on my way to breaking my fears/anxiety as well. OP i should add that Meditating can be done even while you're doing other things. The main point of meditation is to center yourself and become self-aware at all times. Doing so gives you control over your emotions. You can meditate while walking by just being aware of your breathing. This will lead to accelerated results in areas of mental health.

everyone who repped me, i'm in the process of repping back. also reps to anyone who tries it out and posts their experiences
there's no one way to meditate. for ME personally, it's easiest to use some sort of audio aid like what i've posted in the thread, or a guided audio track. eventually i'll get to the point where i can just sit there in silence like a monk but my dorm is just too noisy most of the time. i'll usually listen to the soundwaves with my eyes closed for about 10-15min, then do this short 10min one (it's guided so they tell you when to close/open your eyes):
http://www.fragrantheart.com/cms/fre...n-for-studying
it'll be your first time so you will almost certainly have to deal with the random thoughts and fidgeting. like has been said in the thread, don't fight your thoughts.. just let them come, say "okay", and then let them float away and continue on with your breathing. it's all about training your mind to relax and focus.Meditation is the sh*t (srs) (no hippy) (strong informative thread):

curious.. rapes for explanation.
i had a lucid dream one night when i accidentally od'ed on ZMA lol, since then i've been unsuccessfully trying to do it again.
yeah, i definitely noticed the "high" effect.. and not just with feeling more relaxed, i also get the same visual effect as well where everything is in super vibrant contrast. another way to describe it is like that clarity you get after you just busted a real good nut, lolMeditation is the sh*t (srs) (no hippy) (strong informative thread):

In on meditation crew.
I meditate about ~40 mins a day, every day, for the last few months. Best thing I have ever done. There's a study out that says meditation reduces your pwo cortisol spike. Also a study on meditating about training makes you stronger than light training itself. So it can give you jack3d muscle fibras too.

I agree with OP. I've only tried it a few times, but it's great for your mental health. Even if you don't reach any great epiphanies when you meditate, it's awesome to have that solid 30 min just to recognize your existence in a different way. We're always so focused on doing things that we forget to just be. I recommend reading Mindfulness in Plain English. It was really insightful for me (a beginner) and was a pretty quick read.
