I wouldn't recommend doing it before you workout. And, it will also remove water from muscles, where you really want it.

Terrible idea... he already said why... you want water in your muscles when weight lifting. One of the reasons people take creatine... You want your muscles to be saturated with water before you start lifting heavy. I'm leaving out a lot of specific info... but don't do it before, do it after and it will help your skin even more after sweating after a workout. Just use a towel a lot to wipe down your skin during the sauna.

don't go before your workout, while you lose alot of water in the sauna. You need to be well hydrated during your workout to work on full capacity, your strength levels are alot higher when your body is well hydrated.

If you can't go after workout, i would suggest not going into the gym right after sauna and remember to drink plenty of water while your in the sauna and after.

And no, it does not affect your weight loss or muscle gains. Just remember to drink water during and after

I know this was a long time ago, but why not chime in. If you do sauna before a workout, it should just be for a few minutes to help warm the body and increase blood flow. If you start to break a sweat, you’ve been in too long.

Using a sauna(or steam room) directly after a workout actually has scientifically proven benefits of aiding in endurance and increasing your red blood cell count. This can help with gaining muscle but the results will be very minor. Be sure to drink lots of water directly after to replenish your list fluids.

So if you’re planning on using the sauna, use it after as their are actual benefits and it’s nice and relaxing.

Just my humble opinion but using the sauna/steam room BEFORE lifting is a wonderful way to warmup and grease the joints of this old man. As you said, a few minutes and some basic dynamic stretches for the shoulders, hips and knees is very important. I do get myself sweating and it really helps with keeping me injury free while rowing, benching and squatting. I VERY rarely take a sauna/steam room after heavy lifting. Maybe this is old research but I know that for me, static stretching after my workout and a nice cool shower helps me recover better. In fact, I think a cold shower can help with recovery besides the fact that it makes my already small tallywhacker look even smaller. Then slam down the protein afterwards and I am good.

I like saunas/steam rooms/hot tub on my days off better.
