At least if I'm strong I can move furniture or pickup the neighbor's Yugo and turn it around backwards to **** with them. Oh yeah one time some asshat was parked awkward so I pulled up and lifted my boat trailer up and walked it over sideways into place, that was awesome.

I dont think doing 1RM is anything related to ego for most people, for some people that want to telly you about it every 5 minutes it is but thats a byproduct of the person that will manifest itself in many ways. I'd say its an excellent goal to set, a good way to gauge progress and I'd argue very beneficial in terms of overall strength. I rarely if ever max but thats because I hit my goals and then slacked off.

At work today, I had to deliver a 53 gallon drum of lacquer thinner to a Harley Davidson production facility. I leave it standing up in the bed, but lay it down to roll onto the forklift. I laid it down and their inventory guy Bert-stares me. Then I roll it onto the forklift, we move it out of the bed, I roll it off, then stand it back up.

He's amazed and makes some comment about this is why he should exercise. I said something to the affect of, "Yeah, probably." Bear in mind, these drums only weigh 360 or so, and he can't fathom a man being able to stand one up. It blows my mind how incapable the average person is.

So train for strength, and incorporate serious anaerobic and aerobic exercise. Oly lifts, swimming, jumping rope, and basketball/boxing/other high-demand athletics are so superior to any "bicep-blasting, pec-pumping, body blowout!1!!" routine it's ridiculous.
