What happened here? (shoulder subluxtion? or dislocation?) 3.4k reps

Hello all... looks like I won't be able to lift and continue my bulk or play basketball for a few weeks atleast.. yesterday in basketball a big guy down low about 6'6 250 had the ball posting my teammate, i came over to help, put out my right hand to strip it but the ball was sticky I guess so my hand stuck on the ball as he with two hands grasping the ball decided to try and jump with it towards the hoop.... so two of his hands + his force v. just my right arm and not really using force, unluckily my hand was stuck on the ball (big hands, new ball)... anyway then as he was going up I felt the shoulder extend a bit out of its socket but not all the way, maybe like half way... before it could get completely dislocated he came back down to the floor. So it just kind of stretched everything in there and went back to normal. I was fine and kept playing for another hour came home fine went to bed then woke up this morning with a sore/loose/painful shoulder.... been taking ibuprofen, I went to the gym to shoot around and was able to shoot but with some pain, I'm thinking this is a subluxtion/strain of the shoulder? I've decided to rest from basketball/shooting/lifting anything for atleast a week if not two. just wondering how this injury would be classified? Also does anyone know where I can buy one of those stabilizer/support's for the shoulder?

    reps and thanks!

    Hey bro,

It's quite possible the head of the humerus came out of the glenoid fossa and a slight sub luxation occurred. Does it still feel out of place? If it did happen it would of pulled on some of the ligaments and soft tissue around the area. I would go and see a physio and get it checked out and not lift for 4 or so weeks or depending on when the physio says. You can grab shoulder supports from physio websites and even eBay has them. Even sports stores have them as well.

Was this the type of thing you're after or thinking about? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280747770...#ht_500wt_1180

I would possibly class it as a sprain but without testing range of movement it's hard to tell.

    Hope this helps bro!

thank you for the reply man. It does not feel out of place right now, but depending on how I move it sometimes it will feel like its about to go out of place but doesn't. Its sore and hurts a bit, feels bit loose also. And yes that is what I'm thinking about just found a McDavid one off amazon for 20 bucks ordering it right now. I want to avoid seeing the psysio if I can, going to try and rest from lifting and basketball for a month but will continue to run and workout legs. I'm wondering if I can play soccer with that support thing on, but probably won't even do that for a few weeks. reps for u thx!

there is a lot of tendons in the shoulder... even if you did not fully dislocate it I would be willing to bet you stretch them a bit. I would give your shoulder a rest and concentrate on its structural strength for at least 2 weeks then see how you feel.

thank you bro. Its starting to feel less sore now that it has been a few days, and the pain is down. It was never swollen or anything so that is a good sign, right now avoiding lifting weights and contact sports.... doing some cardio every other day to stay in decent shape while wearing a shoulder vest brace thing on that side to hold it snug. I made an appointment with the doc for friday to see what he says just to be on the safe side. And I agree i believe whatever is in there got stretched past where its normally supposed to stretch to so whatever was stretched needs to tighten back up and heal with time. Icing a couple times a day taking it easy until I see the doc. thx again both of u!

update on this saw doctor one week after the injury occurred. Shoulder checked out OK but with lots of looseness so it seems like a routine strain of the ligaments in there but the doctor said there could potentially be damage to the labrum so I decided to go through with an MRI to make sure. I had the MRI thursday of this past week April 5th, plan on calling them monday first thing to ask for the results, don't have a follow-up with the doctor until April 16th not sure if I can wait that long for results lol. Until then no basketball or lifting weights he said, but he said I can run, bike, do anything lower body + play soccer so not all bad for now.

The doctor is querying a tear in the glenoid labrum, which is the fibro-cartilaginous cup (pretty shallow) where the humerous bone sits. Shoulder joints are extremely complex so without a clinical exam it is difficult to determine what the problem is. You can take paracetamol 500mg tablets - 2 tablets 4 times daily, and ibuprofen (as long as you aren't asthmatic) 200mg tablets - 2 tablets 3 times daily with food. A cold compress can also reduce the inflammation in the joint.

yeah I've been taking Ibuprofen and icing it couple times a day. It was really loose 2 weeks ago, I would say it was 20% healthy or so, not it feels a lot tighter closer to around 70% to normal, still feel it catch sometimes but not nearly as much and that is only when tossing and turning in bed for some reason. The doctor was jerking it around to pinpoint exactly what was wrong he felt it was worth the MRI to see for sure if the labrum was damaged or not.
