I would guess those plates are lathed not milled. It would not surprise me that if the shop had plates to be faced they would machine them on an idle lathe if all their milling machines were in use.

Recently I had the oppurtunity to purchase some newer 90's Chinese made York plate and they had these concentric markings. I think they are probably the lathe marks. I dont think York made em for DP.

Speaking of DP, do they carry any vintage value? If any of you interested, I can get em for you. I know somebody local who has some DP stuff... Mostly smaller plates and spin lock collars.

As Atty said ^^, almost all of my cap plates have this circular "milling", I don't think this is actually a milled plate.

That's right. I was thinking of the word "lathed", but couldn't recall it. In my mind, these are not true milled plates.

It's tough to match the original paint to the aging yorks . I like the original look and it will be nice to find some in excellent original condition in the future. Several of the milled 45s i saved needed to be repainted . I allways prefer to keep them in there original state but some were just two damaged.

It would be good to have some of the barbell club memebers opinion on what pair looks better repainted.

#2 satin black off white / silver letters

I like the flat look on the older plates, w' silver lettering for "YORK" and the 45. If you want a little more shine, just rub a "little" WD40 on the flat plates for a sheen, It's a great look, but a little bit of work, and nowhere near as shiny as the satin.

great question! i've been wondering the same thing for my plates. i'd prefer to have all them match than to be in various states of patina. i've always liked the flat black look but wasn't sure if other people felt similarly. i guess i'll probably try to paint them all now. would like to hear from more illustrious members of the club as well.

by the way, did you take them down to the metal before painting, or did you just get it of the rusty spots and paint over the patina?

I get as much as the paint off as I can
using a disk called a sandblaster. After that i clean them with denatured alcohol. Hit the lettered side first with 2 coats of rustolium double coat let dry over night then the next day spary the milled side 2coats. If Im gonna do the lettering and numbers I give it a light mark with a silver paint marker and smeer it on with my finger tip.

I have been very slowly working on the rest of these

USA stamped 10 milled 35s along with 10 milled 25s wich are a much different casting than my older 25s I have.

i just thought of this...but do you think those old york plates have lead paint on them, and we're exposing ourselves (and family if around) to lead when stripping them?

Wear a mask and gloves and clean outdoors. Wash afterwards.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Oh man...I've been doing it my garage this whole time. Maybe the lead in my system will give me a lower center of gravity for squatting.

It would be good to have some of the barbell club memebers opinion on what pair looks better repainted.

#1 flat black non painted York
#2 satin black off white / silver letters

    What do you prefer?
I know it is not possible to save the original paint sometimes (just look at the plates in the background) but I try to keep them as close as possible and the years or wear remind me how long I have been doing this (over thirty years!). I always thought the Yorks had a nice in-bewteen flat and satin look and it is hard to find that perfect match.

Oh, the black thing in the foreground is a dehumidifier that is non-electrical...it works great to keep the moisture off when I have to store plates in the barn. http://drizair.com/products.html

I know that there are some experts in here.....but my small contribution. I have soaked rusty plates in a kiddie pool overnight before hitting them with the wire wheel. Mix in the chemnical of choice and the rust flies off 24 hours later.

i'm no expert but, cast iron is pourous, that water could find it's way deep into that iron and start rusting from the inside. moisture and iron don't mix. just my opinion.
