To get objective results, they're going to have to have samples of lifters all trained to the same level with subgroups having the same muscle fiber distribution. Guys with my (presumed) distribution find it easy to put on muscle with low- and high-volume training. On the other hand, we find it a little too easy to get fat, too.

Exactly. When I watch the olympics and see people in weight classes they are shredded. I think the biggest difference is in training styles. I would equate bodybuilding to running marathons whereas powerlifting is more of a sprint.
In bodybuilding you are really trying to get a good pump and working the muscle with volume (ie doing higher reps / running longer distances). In bodybuilding you are looking for size and endurence.
In powerlifiting you are trying to get more explosive power for lower reps / doing more sprints. In powerlifting you are look for strength / the most pounds in one rep.
Of course in both training regimens you mix it up, but the main emphasis is on one or the other. Although, I guess there are those in the middle who may run 5ks.

I was just thinking about this today, at the gym this kid was on the bench next to me trying to kill himself with a 30lb dumbbell and he kept staring at me funny for not using more weight than I was. I am just at the beginning of my journey, but I did realize the difference between the two before I decided to pick up a weight. I personally am sick of being and looking fat, so I'm not really concerned with impressing the guy next to me at the gym with a bigger dumbbell than him.
