I usually warm up with light weights and do a brief stretch

It's generally recommended, but not necessarily needed. Doing some cardio until you break a light sweat, doing a bit of dynamic stretching and then doing warm up sets of 1-3 reps increasing about 10-20 kilos until you reach your work weight would likely be all the warm up you could need.

That said, if you're not having any problems, you PERSONALLY might not even need that. There would be no harm in adding it though, as a preventative.

repped, cheers for the input guys, i was just curios after reading a few articles like this one http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...-muscles_N.htm saying that stretching and some other articles saying warming up before weights is not needed and may be counter productive

    .

Ah, see, that is static stretching. It is generally not recommended to do static stretching before weights.

What I was discussing in my post (with regard to stretching) was dynamic stretching. Give that a bit of a look if you're interested.

I do dynamic stretching a warm up jog. Brief core work and warm up sets on any compound lift.

trust me warming up with light weights and slowly increasing the weight by 25-50IB (depending which muscle you workout of course, much less weight for shoulders) its the best for injury prevention and to get all kinds of erections in the muscles

and of coz prevent some rotator cuff injury
