Last week I got to fish a few hours because my data collection of the summer research internship was fullfilled on the 14th. 191 hours down, 109 hours to go. Can you say "grind"?
Not really. Caught nothing but average stuff last week.

I've caught two of those huge things now right next to the boat we live on. One on a little piece of hot dog and one on a little piece of french fry. Even the fourty pounders have tiny little mouths. If your local carp are the white amur (or grass carp), you won't catch them on anything but vegetation. The regular carp will eat bread, dough balls, peanut butter and jelly sandwich balls (probably the most productive), corn, cheese, hot dogs, cat food, dog food, etc.

carp are by far the dumbest fish ive ever seen, just throw a bunch of cheese doodles or cheetos in the water and they'll all pop up right infront of you. ive used mini sausages before to catch them...not even fun, brb lifting some heavy ass fish out of the water than doesnt even put up a fight

You cracking the crabs when you use them for bait or just pull the legs and claws and use whole?
I'm gonna have to mother ship a couple yaks in our next trip to Port Oconnor, there's a back lake I want in badly but just can't get in there with the boat. There's a couple flats boats that basically run over mud to get in there, damn things are amazing.

Alright brahs, I doubt any of you will see this in time, but
going fishing on navy pier lake michigan (leaving in 5 hours to secure a good spot). Praying I have a really good day, but I have never been pier fishing before, any advice, or advice in general for lake michigan pier fishing would be much appreciated..
I am praying it will be a good day, but so far, it isn't. Re-spooled my rod and it went horribly wrong, I forgot to soak it in warm water, forgot to put it through the first eye, and tried my best to put tension on it as I reeled but by the time I was done, the line was pretty loose. I admit I am lazy for not redoing it again, but tomorrow I am bringing everything with, I am hoping once the line gets wet it will behave, otherwise I will re spool it properly.

Navy Pier Lake Michigan fishing in 5 hours
Re spooled rod horribly wrong, line is loose but still casts and retrieves fine. Will re spool tomorrow if it isn't working properly after being wet.
Advice on fishing off pier please (fishing using minnows)
EDIT: Turned out to be a pretty bad day.
Caught a few Gobi. All the perch caught today were tiny.
Largest fish pulled on entire pier was a 2lb trout.
Also, was fishing government pier not navy.
Going fishing again on local lakes/rivers tomorrow for carp/catfish to cheer me up.Last edited by M0hi; 06-30-2012 at 02:04 PM.

Tried to catch some carp today, there are a ton of them under a bridge by my house ranging from 15 to 30lbs. It didn't go well, I was using some cheap ass 15lb test line and they broke it 3 out of 4 times. The one time I fought with it for 5 minutes to get it to land, then the line broke. Was using some carp bait made of corn and cheese, the stuff was to soft, they would just suck it off and spit out the hook. Then I smartened up and started using corn. I just put on some 20lb test berkley trilene so I should have better luck tomorrow.
Anyone attempt to eat a carp before, tips, tricks? I hear you should let them soak in milk overnight.

(Cliffs at end) I have a story to tell, so bear with me because I am interested if anyone else has had some of these days.
It has been very hot, and very dry for some time now. Water levels have dropped significantly. A fishing trip however, was already planned. I set out, feeling it was going to be a horrible day, there was just so much wrong with the day, its weather, and the activeness of fish. Not many people were out on the lake like us.
At around 7AM, we get our first bite, something takes a buzzbait and fights like hell. Lo and behold, of all things its a 7lb catfish. We are fishless for hours, trying many bays, points, bars etc. Nothing except bluegill everywhere. We decide to head deep 40-49ft or so. And resort to worms. Feeling defeated we just wanted to relax. But somehow, we drifted quite a ways, and magic hour happened.
On a boat of 3 we got 6 big fish in the boat and 3 that broke off at the boat. We didn't catch many fish, but we did catch upper tier for the lake we were at.
I ended up catching an 8lb channel off a warm, in what was at least a 2 minute fight with 4 long runs in total. My friend caught probably one of the top 3 pike in the entire lake (only around low to mid 30" cus its Illinois) and his dad was doing nothing but catching huge bass. All off worms in deep water.
Cliffs-
Horrible day for fishing
Go fishing, nothing for hours
By some random miracle, many fish in 1 hour in an unexpected spot.
Happen to any of your guys who have been fishing a long time?
Pic of my catfish, nothing special, but it's the biggest I've caught FOR NOW
One of these days I'll catch a monstrous cat. Just need to find out where one would be. Excuse my awkward face, I was excited.
The lake is catch and release only so hopefully when I am older the fish will be much bigger.Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

m0hi, happens all the time down here but in the salt, fish bit will start/stop in an instant. Lots of times it will have to do with the tide, if it's slack nothing happening but once it starts to move in or out the fish turn on. Freshwater obviously doesn't have tides, sounds like you may have just finally located the fish.

I was super anxious to go back out there again and see if I did indeed find this magical spot. My friends think it's a one time think, but I personally believe it may have been one of only two humps/bar/saddles in the entire lake which may be why the fish are attracted to it. I am pretty sure it would be a drastic difference of around 20ft in depth. However my friend is not taking me out this weekend to try it, as it is a private lake hell bent on preventing infestation, they only let you rent their boats at 12 dollars an hour. No live bait (except worms). Catch and release. If however, this does turn out to be more than a one time thing, I will never get bored of it.
