Hello Nutrition Misc,
I had a discussion with somebody the other day about how weight gain will occur if you are have caloric surplus, regardless about how it is achieved. I gave an example that you could even gain weight by only eating salad, you'd just have to eat A LOT of salad since they are not very calorie dense.
Today she came back to me questioning that idea by asking me if you could gain weight by drinking only orange juice, without eating any food. I answered yes, if you drink enough. But I don't think my answer is satisfactory to me or her without any real scientific backing... can somebody who knows a thing or two about nutrition give me a clear answer on this?
Thanks.

Calories are energy.
To put it simply, if you consume more calories than are immediately needed, they will get stored. The more you consume, the more that will get stored, eventually in adipose tissue.
Calories in > Calories out, and you gain weight.
OJ in particular is no different, other than it wouldn't be the most efficient/healthiest way to gain weight. You'd be getting very little EFA's and a low overall variety of fats. You'd also have a very low protein intake with insufficient essential amino acids. And you would obviously become deficient in several micronutrients as well. Not to mention the excessive fructose intake which in itself could pose problems.
Can you gain weight with only OJ? Yes. But I'm not sure how long you would be able to do it for before having to worry about much bigger health related problems.

This OP. Didja know, that a Barrel of crude oil (about 42 US Gallons) has 1,400,000 calories?
Maybe the barrel of oil example will give her a reality check. :3Last edited by DAaaMan64; 04-07-2014 at 09:18 AM.

Drinking fruit juices, including orange juice, has been associated with obesity.
1 liter of a typical orange juice has about 400 Cal. To get 2,500 Cal (to meet your sedentary style calorie needs) and consuming nothing else, you would need to drink 6 liters of orange juice per day. So, to gain weight, at least 7 liters. This could cause diarrhea because of too much fructose and water intoxication because of lack of sodium.

Thats pretty much MLM 101, take some new "superfruit" from the rainforest, juice it, sell it for some astronomical price to your "distributors" as a "home based business" for a couple months before the grocery store starts selling it for 1/10th of the cost. Goji, Noni, anything else that rhymes with phony
