chimps are pretty smart and Gorillas are almost as smart. chimps are closer to us and they fight each other. Gorillas are more distant cousins and they pretty much only fight other animals and are peaceful gentle giants.

They are not at "war" with each other. War is something that only exists in human society. They are experiencing the very beginnings of real social evolution, the tribal part. They aren't at war with each other, it's a form of tribal checks and balances, to let the other group know, "Hey, we're here, and there would be consequences for both of us if you attacked us." They are not out to exterminate each other like humans do... The idea that a religous figure could be the only reason for hostility in the animal kingdom is rediculous.

No, it sounds like exactly what I described. Tribal checks and balances, do some research fool. Just because the author of that piece uses the term "war" does not mean it is a literal "war" among the chimps, nor does it mean the chimps think of it that way.
