    does protein make you fat?

i am not training to become a body builder...i only want to increase strength and get toned

but everywhere i go everyone is telling me i look fatter and I've gained weight

i have been 100 pounds give or take a few pounds for the past 8 years but i gained 22 pounds since i started working out about 5 months ago...i used to take protein pretty consistently after working out...is that what made me gain weight? i also noticed that my previously flat tummy is now a gut :[

i do not want to get bulky so should i stop taking protein powder shakes?

    any advice/help is greatly appreciated...thanks!

you don't need protein shakes as long as you are eating right, food > supps everytime

at the end of the day its all about your caloric intake so it could be the shakes causing weight gain

keep the protein the same, dial down your carbs/fats

i wouldn't doubt that you're still eating the same way you did before you started working out, and now you're just adding a protein shake to that amount

how often do you drink a week?

    ^^ this

But also if you have been using a low quality protein it would have a lot of fillers and crap in it that could be responsible for weight gain. Look for a higher quality that is above 80% protein content. (divide protein per servings by total size of serving)

I imagine that if protein were going to be converted to fat, it would first have to be converted to glucose and only if the amount produced were then in excess of daily maintenance requirements would there be conversion to fat. But as noted above, this simply isn’t going to happen under any even reasonably normal circumstances. No human could eat enough protein on a daily basis for it to occur.

So, as noted above, while the pathway exists for protein to be stored as fat, and folks will continue to claim that ‘excess protein just turns to fat’, it’s really just not going to happen under any sort of real-world situation. Certainly we can dream up odd theoretical situations where it might but those won’t apply to 99.9% of real-world situations.
