I delivered at pizza hut. Pizza Hut keeps half of the delivery charge, and most people don't tip a dime. Because of gas and what not I often did not even make minimum wage, and that's with a car that got 25 miles to the gallon. I worked in a pretty piss poor community, though.

LOL get that **** out of here.
$2.50 per pizza doesn't cover gas?
I knew a pizza delivery kid in HS on average he did 3 deliveries at a time. Thats $7.50 a trip. Lets assume gas is $4.00. That's almost 2 gallons.
2 gallons = 40 miles on an average car
3 stops =/= 40 miles
Assuming you don't make minimum wage, your employer by law has to pay the difference too.

Throwing in my 2 cents.
I was a GM for a corporate Papa John's for a couple of years. Here's some info:
Before there was a delivery charge the drivers made 60 cents a delivery. PJ now charges $2.00(where I am) and the drivers make 1.39 a delivery...so of that two dollars drivers are only making another 79 cents a delivery. The remaining 1.21 goes to Da Papa.
While I was there Papa decided that driver's would no longer be making minimum wage (7.75/h) but instead 4.25/h. Their thought process was restaurant waiters make 3 bucks an hour and claim their tips then it should be the same for the drivers ("waiters on wheels" bullsh*t). Majority of drivers prior did not claim cash tips, only ones from credit cards. They got away with paying them less than minimum because they were required to claim theirs which normally would equal more than 7.75/h. The only upside (if you would call it that) is the driver didn't make an average of 7.75 an hour then Papa would pay. It was rare that it would happen but if it did it means you weren't making any tips.
Papa does not pay for insurance or maintenance on the driver's car.
A good tip would be more than 3 dollars. Drivers appreciate the 5 spot because they are not making **** otherwise. Also, drivers know who tips well, so the last time when you gave them a 1 dollar, they remember. If you stiff them, they'll remember. If they take more than one delivery on a run who do you think they will go to first? It sure as **** is not the guy that gave him 50 cents last time they delivered there.
I don't work for Papa anymore because of a lot of that corporate bull****. I'll always tip the drivers well.

Ok. That's an interesting anecdote, but I never heard of anyone doing that nor did it myself. One time I did two deliveries at once, and only got one delivery fee.

Even if 50% of the delivery fee went to the driver, he should be able to still make out even. He's not using a gallon of gas to go to multiple houses all within a reasonable distance from the pizza place

Are you a herp derp or do you just pretend to be?
Let me examine your claims:
We have 3 people, A, B, C
Each pays $2.50 for a grand total of $7.50 going to Pizza Hut for delivery fees.
You're telling me you only get $2.50 from person A, yet are gonna also deliver to person B and C. That's bull**** and isn't true or wasn't 5 years ago. But lets say it is. Maybe you should take up the compliant with your boss you ******* who is pocketing $5 for "delivery fees"
Your gas should be covered by your delivery fee. If you're not getting my $2.50 because your boss is pocketing it, take it up with him not me.
In fact since I now know my $2.50 isn't even going to anything useful, I'm going to be less inclined to give you a tip because you're working for some shady ass business that is lying about where my money is going.| ♫Audiophile♫ | To ∞ & → | The Ohio State University Alumni |

This is how it's theoretically supposed to work, but how it pans out varies. If selfish douchebags like many of the posters ITT are your customers, and you're driving relatively long distances, you're not making shyt. If you're covering a smaller radius and your customers tip ok, you do ok. But this is America where everyone is greedy as fuk, so goodluckbro.jpeg.

It depends on who you're working for. I worked for a smaller chain, which probably was in fact shadier than average. For how somewhere else, like Papa John's works, see one of the above posts. Gas "should" be covered by the delivery fee, doesn't mean it works out that way.
AND ONCE AGAIN, YOU ARE FUKING ILLITERATE. YOU NEGGED ME FOR BEING A 27 YEAR OLD DELIVERY BOY. I WAS A DELIVERY BOY 7 YEARS AGO FOR 3 WEEKS YOU FUKING MORON.
