Hypertrophy or Strength Training While Cutting?

My overall goal is to increase muscle mass and strength. I know that in order to build muscle you need to be in a caloric surplus and to lose fat you need to be in a caloric deficit. Since I'm between 17%-20% body-fat I want to cut first. I've been reading around and people say you can gain strength on a cut but not build muscle since your in a deficit. Should I focus on strength or can I build muscle on a cut since I'm relatively new to lifting?

If your goal is to increase mass and strength...they why even bother with a cut? Sounds counter productive.

    hypertrophy.

strength training requires fairly quick progressive load and a caloric surplus to gain weight.

Strength training doesn't require quick progression. It just requires progression. There's no time limit as to when this occurs. Strength can be obtained without gaining weight.

Hypertrophy is building lean body mass and that would be rather difficult to do on a caloric deficit.

At the begginer stage yes. Once your lifts get heavy enough you add weight once a week or every few weeks.

It's hard to build mass on a calorie defict.

I tend to focus on merely maintaining my strength during cutting.

Well my overall goal is to get stronger and bigger (but not fat). At the moment I think I should cut because my body-fat percentage is quite high.

If you're 147lbs and your body fat is high, you should do something like Starting Strength because you're obviously a beginner. There is no way you can have any sort of muscle AND a significant amount of fat at 147lbs. Read the nutrition forum sticky threads to find out about cutting/bulking.

Keeping with your same routine and just trying to maintain the best you can is a valid (and popular) option when cutting. I usually switch to a strength routine when I start my cut because then I can usually make some progress and that's more motivating to me than maintaining.

I've been reading the 3rd edition of Starting Strength by Mark Ripptoe ... good stuff. If I decide to go for a strength training program instead of hypertrophy during my cut, I will definitely do SS.

Yea I would cut. That was a pretty bad bulk. Your weight gain has to be way slower.

What page should I be looking at if I have the 2nd edition? Me reading the 3rd edition was a typo, I actually have the 2nd edition.
