I have discovered a number of songs/artists via this forum from people posting in the music threads. There are artists such as Zep, The Beatles, and more recently Metallica where they were so overplayed that even their fans often find themselves turning the channel looking for something fresh. So, ITT we will post deep cuts from albums that we consider to be among an artists great works, yet have probably gone unheard by anyone other then their hard core fans.
This idea really springs from Eomrat's posting of Shinkicker by Rory Gallagher some time back. I am embarrassed as a fan of the blues, and bluesy rock to admit I had never heard of him. I can assure you my iPod is filled with some great new (to me) music to the credit of that one post! Thanks Eom!!
If you have an interesting story to go with it, all the better!
I obviously had heard of Deep Purple years before, but wasn't impressed having really heard only classics such as Smoke on the Water, Speed King, Woman from Tokyo, and occasionally, Burn played on the radio. In fact when I later discovered them I was completely blown away to find the version of Hush that I knew was Purple! It wasn't until the release of the Slide It In album by Whitesnake that I started looking into Purple after hearing Coverdale had been in the band. Its kind of crazy with a band like Purple who's musical family three has grown so broad how many different styles of music its members have generated over the years, and how many other successful bands have come from them, this tree continues to sprout with Black Country Communion recently added, which further brings another previously unknown by the name of Joe Bonamassa to my iPod!!
Interesting? Probably only to me.
What do got?

By far, Steppenwolf's best song, but not the most popular. Hardcore blues.
One post and this thread has already paid dividends, awesome IC!!
As for Hendrix, I've never been a big fan, love his guitar style, but not so much the music, though I admittedly haven't dug to deep. That song, being more blues, less psychedelic in style intrigues me!
As for the Black Keys, love them!
Edit: I think I owe you some Eddie Hazel reps Charles!!

Here is a lesser known track from uriah heep. Back in the day fm only played easy living and stealing ....this track is one of my favs from these guys
I hope it fits in with what you are trying to do here...
Interesting for sure. Not to keep harping on Purple but this sounds like Gillan and Lord, but gone in a more progressive rock direction rather then blues rock. UH are certainly one of those bands that other then their radio hits, I haven't ever heard. Thanks!

Heep was a much more progressive band than they were ever givrn credit for. Worth a listen for sure.
Ok everyone knows this band and several of their songs. Here is one i never heard on the radio, but imo one of their great tunes...
Here is another lost deep track. A great song about a guy gone insane. Some may recall this track, but im guessing many have not heard in ages.....certainly worth another listen

Sounds very familiar to me, either I happened to be listening that one time they played it on the radio or it sounds like something else. Either way I really like it, and again, never owned a BOC album, will have to dig deeper now!
Thanks again!

This is from the 'Layla' album, and IMO is the real gem of that session. To have Clapton and Allman in the studio together, trading leads, was a piece of magic.

Damn, this one post alone is going to give me headaches! I have never heard of a single artist listed, and liked each and every one. I'm going to be beating the hell out of Youtube checking these guys out!!
Thank you!

I thought I was the only Alice Cooper freak left! This was possibly my favorite album.

Not much airtime.
I thought that was the point.

Awesome! I have to admit to only taking Clapton at face value, never digging into his vast catalog. This thread could turn out to be pretty embarrassing for me.

Its cool. I was thinking along the lines of stuff only hardcore fans would know even existed. Most people who listened to rock radio in the 70's and early 80's would certainly know that one. No worries though, solid addition!

This entire soundtrack is f'king genius. I have the soundtrack and the film ("Morning Of The Earth" - our Aussies here should know this one) and it's unbelievable. As a surfer, it speaks to me even more. But it's awesome, period.

This one is not truly a deep cut as it is not from a particularly well known band.
I first heard these guys on Don Kirshners Rock Concert. I am assuming it was a rerun since I heard this first in 78 or 79.
God, how I loved "Rock Concert". I was exposed to so much great music Friday nights at 1100pm!! I use to cover my little tiny black and white TV with a blanket so my parents couldn't see the light and I would have to put my face right next to the crappy little speaker.
My brother was a huge Dire Straits fan ( No, not the "Money for Nothing" Dire Straights.) It took me a long time, and a lot of growing up, to "get it".
I get it now.
I most definitely get it.
REO Speedwagon. Sadly, I am not sure how many people are aware that they used to be a Rock and Roll Band

Great idea for a thread, Steve. In the early/mid 70's, Atlanta's 96Rock (WKLS) actually had a deep cuts "night", as well as an "Album Hour", where they played complete current albums on Sat night. It was great, and many of us looked forward to the featured artist's albums played in entirety, without any commercial breaks.

That song was always considered "mainstream" in my time/area, and it is also one of my favorites.

Here are a couple of ones that come to mind atm:
And...pardon the 10 second commercial intro
Damn, I love this song and the change-ups....
And...
To fans, this is fairly well know, but it never really got air play, it just drives..and drives...it's brilliant. I chose this version...out of many available.
It should also be mentioned, to be kept in some context, that many "deep cuts" were often just long songs that mainstream radio would not or could not air back in the day due to commercial break time. This still goes on today, but I've really always admired the bans of yesterday who didn't give a $hit, and composed what they wanted to in spite of this well know fact. This was always a major factor in "who were really rebellious" as a band/artist, and not caving to corporate controlled stations.

Reason: typo
Speaking of which, unless you're a Queen fan (I'm not, really...despite respect for the band) this one might not be as non-mainstream as I think...but I think it's fairly obscure regarding radio play; this is one of my favorites...and learned to play many years back (easy, actually ).
