    Cold Showers?

First wasn't really sure where to put this but I see it mentioned a lot that cold showers are beneficial. So here are my questions.

    1. Do you take a shower with all cold water or do a "James Bond Shower" and start hot and end cold?
    2. Is one better than the other?
    3. Is it better to do right after a workout or right when you wake up? All showers like this or only some?
    4. Any input on the benefits would be great.

    Thanks

If you start straight with cold shower this can be a shock to your body and you can get sick. Start with a warm shower and slowly open up the cold water over a few minutes and see how your body tolerates the cold water. Don't wet your head with the cold water and don't let yourself become cold that you start to shiver as this can make you sick. Over time you will notice that your body can tolerate cold water showers longer and with colder water.

Cold showers are great in the morning when you wake up and when there is cool weather outside. Cold water helps to wake and freshen you up. Cold showers also help you be more resistant to cooler weather.

cold showers are good to help pull out lactic acid build up in your muscles.

I heard it can help with soreness. I would take a contrast shower (alternate between hot and cold, 30 seconds each) after wrestling tournaments. It seemed to have helped, but thats one of those things you can't be sure of. Who knows if i would have been sore if I hadn't taken a contrast shower?

If you're going to be training in the same gym as I, and at the same time, I don't care what the temperature of your shower might be, but only that you actually take a shower before arriving at the gym.

cold showers can help reduce muscle soreness and aid recovery, but I'm not so sure if it makes a hige different to someone who just works out a few times a week, but it does work for professional athletes - it is common for pro rugby players to have a cold bath or even enter a cryotherapy booth to help recovery. So cant see why a shower isnt the same.

I believe cryotherapy works by REDUCING circulation. When you stress your tendons and ligaments, your body induces inflammation which is actually a healing process. However, excessive fluid buildup actually hinders further recovery by restricting circulation into said areas. By keeping inflammation down to a minimum immediately after exercise with cryotherapy, your body is better set up for a faster recovery in the oncoming days. At least that's my understanding of it. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Normally I don't shower before the gym because I'll have to shower after anyway. lol I make sure to put on deodorant but the rest of me is an ugly site. In fact, half the time my hair is a little greasy, I haven't brushed my teeth and I already feel a little gross all over. I know, that's nasty...but I don't think I smell too bad when I lather up the armpits. I shower everyday so it isn't like it's built up for months at a time.

I like to do contrast showers pre-and post workout, pre-workout the cold kinda shocks my system and wakes me up, and post workout helps with recovery.

Contrast water therapy works wonders at relieving muscle soreness and aiding recovery, it is not just in your head. Plenty of documented proof of this.

I can't stand cold water!! I cool off in the ac at home after I workout for about 2 hours then I take a nice hot shower. Can't stand cold water unless I'm drinking it although some summers I do get tempted to take a cold shower after work. It gets quite hot here...

I thought it was the complete opposite. Did a quick google search and found this...

"Heat treatments should be used for chronic conditions to help relax and loosen tissues, and to stimulate blood flow to the area"

    And this

"Ice moderately reduces the circulation of blood in an area of the body so the soft tissue and joints have access to less fluid to create swelling.* Meanwhile, the application of HEAT to an area is like turning on a drippy faucet: It increases the blood flow and it will increase the swelling."

Here is what it says about imporving circulation:

"Improves circulation. Good blood circulation is vital for overall cardiovascular health. Healthy blood circulation also speeds up recovery time from strenuous exercises and work. Alternating between hot and cold water while you shower is an easy way to improve your circulation. Cold water causes your blood to move to your organs to keep them warm. Warm water reverses the effect by causing the blood to move towards the surface of the skin. Cold shower proponents argue that stimulating the circulatory system in this way keeps them healthier and younger looking than their hot water-loving counterparts"

Or how about this. If you're not doing a full body routine, why not just rotate ice packs on the muscles you worked after the workout?

Funny, I was doing some research on this yesterday, and am convinced of cold showers. Took my first cold shower today and it was tough. I felt refreshed coming out. I'm going to stick to it for a few weeks and see if any of this jargon they say comes true. Here's some info on cold showers: (source pasted at bottom)

    Pros of cold showers:
~Strengthens the immune system (this happens when your cold showers are kept under approx. 10 minutes, that amount of time can vary with your body type.)

    ~Flushes toxins from the skin

~Increases blood circulation which helps flush out toxins everywhere in the body (This is especially beneficial for the muscles and surface of the skin.)

~Promotes growth and repair of the circulatory system by stimulating capillary beds often left to "stagnate" with blood

~Keeps the pores of you skin more or less closed during the shower (You don’t absorb as much of the water and any products you are putting on your skin, which is very important with all the garbage added to our water like chlorine and fluoride as well as any toxins in your soaps, etc. The human body absorbs water and personal care products more readily in a regular hot shower because the pores are opened wide from the heat.)

~Less steam is made in your cold showers because it is not hot (Therefore less chlorine is inhaled into the lungs through the steam.)

~Although this is counter intuitive, in the winter, cold showers are the best thing to keep you warm for the rest of the day (It's ideal to have a heater in your bathroom so that as soon as you step out of the shower you can quickly towel off and have warm air on your skin.)

~You save money on your energy bill

~You will have a shorter shower time

~Increases fertility in men (Cooler temperatures on the testicles raises sperm count, but of course too much cold water for too long would be counterproductive. Even if you don't intend to conceive a child, having high male fertility is a source of strength and longevity according to the ancient Taoists and traditional Chinese doctors.)

~Builds courage and will power (A.k.a. nerve force, which makes other tasks in life easier to conquer with the "soul mirror" exercise.)

~Hot showers continually wash natural oils from your skin (Your body will often compensate by either producing more oil or not enough. The oil made by your body will always be better than any topical moisturizer you may be shelling out lot’s of money for, so why wash it off every day in a hot shower? The oil made by your body is not dirty unless your diet and environment is.)

~They are one of the great antiaging secrets for keeping your skin tight, elastic and vibrant

~Has an anti-depressant effect on your mood

~Balances the autonomic nervous system (This makes you feel relaxed and peaceful, yet still alert, when you get out of the shower.)

~Helps you develop the ability to handle lower temperatures while maintaining your body heat (No more complaining about cold weather! As a born and raised Canadian, people complaining about cold weather is one of my biggest pet peeves. If you can't take the cold, get out of the freezer!)

~Cleanses your body and mind of negative emotions that are your own or picked up from others

    ~Contributes to your longevity potential

~Wakes you up in the morning!

cold showers, water secrets, benefits of water, cold shower, factors of longevity
Cons of cold showers (when it might be best to avoid them):
(In the case of a need to avoid cold showers for any health reasons as listed below, luke warm water can be used in its place to avoid the negative effects of a hot shower.)

~Women who are menstruating (Some women find it too much to handle during this time. Then again, it could help as well.)

~Women after the 7th month of pregnancy (This all depends on your reaction to the water. If you're not thrown into shock by the cold water, it might be OK.)

~Immediately after a man has ejaculated (His body is focused on making new sperm cells and semen at this time, so cold showers can be a bit too stressful.)

    ~Suffering from an eating disorder

~If you are underweight (This usually goes along with having a low body temperature and a general metabolic weakness which might prevent your body from generating enough heat to withstand the cold temperatures.)

~Immediately after a vigorous workout (Start hot and finish cold to avoid muscle cramping, it can happen!)

~Some people have experienced cold showers making depression worse (Although it has also been said that cold showers can help depression, it's best to use your own judgement.)

Yes this is true (edited original post to reflect that). I'm actually going to start my own log for cold showers later tonight to see if any of these claims have any truth potential. This morning was day two of cold water therapy. I'll post my log link in here later if anyone is interested in following my results.

Going to be experimenting out many things such as mood changes, weight loss and seeing if it actually keeps me warm the rest of the day.

Some people take hot showers before a work out as a warm up routine.

I do hot showers while cleaning and then switch it to cold before I get out to close the pores. Especially important for rinsing hair, I heard really hot water flushes out any conditioner you put in.

Sure, they definitely help if your gym is full of hot chicks. Seriously though, just take a shower and get your rest.

I contrast from hot to cold after a workout when I'm really sore. Takes a while to adjust to the change and they're never really pleasant showers, but it does wonders for my recovery which is more important.
    Yeah, I'm new...
