Man, its family though.. If you really have 50,000 that you can lend, that wont cause money problems for you. I would just lend it to her, but you cant expect it to be payed back. Family is family, if my family was in need and lending them money wouldn't cause financial problems for myself, I would give them money.

I wouldn't do it OP. You have lend her 10k, but she never gave it back. If you give her 50k, what makes you think you'll get it back? The more you give her, the more often she is going to ask. Do not let her take advantage of you. If you had to ask whether you should give her 50k in the first place, then the answer is no.

wouldn't be so quick to dismiss. Sounds like your aunt can be a savvy businesswoman. You said they were millionaires who could support a 50k/month person expense budget (at least for a little while). See if it seems like a worthwhile investment and go about it in a formal way. If not, I'd just pass. Point being, for as hard up as she is now, it seems like she isn't a newbie to business either.
Ultimately I'd probably say no as she seems pretty irresponsible with her money thoughNothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Oh snap, where you been bellamo?
ShayZ, if you're aunt was serious she would have sold all her jewelry already and asked you for less. I doubt her jewelry will cover the loan even if she was serious about paying back. You loaned her 10k and she didn't sell anything to pay that back but she us saying she will sell her jewelry and her daughters to pay back 5x that plus what she already owes you? Yeah, right. Family and money don't mix.
If you lend her the money she will avoid paying you, say that she Is family and you can trust her and other family members will get involved. You'll also have 50k less. If you don't lend it to her you'll have similar problems but still have 50k.
At best you can tell her to sell the jewelry and you'll give her some of it because you don't have it all now. If she doesn't sell her jewelry don't give her anymore and leave it at that. You need to see some commitment that she is willing to sacrifice something to get something in return. If her daughter is willing to give up her jewelry too in order to support her mother that's even better. But if comes down to "but I want to keep my jewelry and you have so much money, just loan me a huge chunk" I say walk away from it and avoid it as best as you can.
EDIT: If she does sell her stuff l and really uses the money properly you can buy her new jewelry or something later on once she pays you back.Last edited by NYCJovi; 03-08-2012 at 04:08 PM.

Well...
Had my sister call today. Well, I spoke first. My sister handles all the financials, and she politely told my aunt we just were not liquid enought o loan $50,000, so my aunt said what about $25,000, my sister said no... My aunt said, can you help at all, and my sister told her she just cannot do it at this moment.
It was tough to do, and I think my aunt may hate us for a little bit, but I think we made the right decision. We considered calling her back and just gifting her $10,000, but we decided not as it would likely just go towards a complete loss, and we feel that if we keep the $10,000 we can do so much with it. And giving her $10,000 is really just pissing it awayRIP mainsqueeze530
