Whats your opinion on slingshots? (bench press slingshot) srs

i bought one at the arnold on friday thats different from that one but its the same principle.
I talked to the guys at the booth selling it and talked to them about it and whether or not its considered cheating because i felt like it was. Their response (while trying to sell it to me) was that if you can rep 225 x5 normally and with this you could bench 225 x15, you're going to get stronger either way and they compared it to a board press because it gets the weight 2 inches off your chest.

My 3RM on bench press is 315 but with this i now warm up @315 for anywhere from 10- 15 reps depending on my wrists.
i maxed out at 405 for three reps just yesterday wearing it. (will post vid in follow up thread)

What are your thoughts misc? cheating or not?

One of the guys as my gym uses it and he likes it. I tried it and didnt care for it. I flare my elbows out a little bit (not all the way out) but i cant bench with them tucked into my side.

I like my inzer elbow sleeves better then it. 505 lb bench video is in my sig.

fwiw, I did a 5x5 with 415 on friday. only used my wrist wraps, no sleeves. Few weeks ago when I tried that sling shot, I threw 225 on there and did it twice then racked it and took it off. doesnt work well for me at all.

almost like a bench shirt, but not as radical. it acts like a compressed spring when the bar is at your chest. helps you get momentum getting the weight up.

as the weight comes down on your chest, the band stretches across your chest providing a "slingshot" off of your chest.

I got mine from house of pain. inzer elbow sleeves, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and lever belt. its all inzer and im very happy with it.
the elbow sleeves are worth their weight in gold.

yes. think of a box spring compressed all the way down. stored kinetic energy. now let the box spring go and what happens?

same principle wearing a bench shirt/sling shot. but with added weight on top.

does it help your bench at all or just prevent injury because i had and lost a pair of elbow wraps that i liked but felt like didn't help my bench that much.

definitely helps elbows from not hurting with that kind of weight. i usually wear them when i go over 455. it helps a little bit too because their strapped so tight too.

Im doing a bench comp in 6-7 weeks. its raw so the only think i can use is wrist wraps.

Interesting, anymore info on sleeves? My bench is about 330 right now, what do sleeves actually do? Protect elbows from flaring out? Do you get any assistance from them? Will rep for good answers.

thats what my thoughts were originally too and I'm hoping to disprove it. if i start using bands around the bench while repping 315, I'm hoping my 3rm of 315 will jump up to 4 or 5

I posted the link in the thread. no u can still flare out a little bit, thats why i like them. the sling shot prevents that.
support for your elbow and tendon when your lifting heavy weight. it doest help a little bit for me as far as it being so tight that when it is compressed when im benching, that it does want to straighten out.

Helping and cheating are pretty similar when it comes to this, seems similar to having a spot take wait off at the bottom of every rep, sell that s*** to a fatty and go buy a real slingshot. Also get a bag of fishtank pebbles, best ammo for the low price

I've been having some annoying nagging pain in my left elbow for the last week, not sure what it's from. I've been going easy but may pick up the elbow sleeves as a precautionary measure. Would this be considered cheating though?

I love mine. It's a great way to overload your bench and get used to the feel of heavier weights.

I'm still recovering from a torn pec so it's been a necessity in my bench workouts. I can take a lot of the stress off of my chest while still handling heavier weights.

I wouldn't call it cheating any more than using bands or chains is cheating. It allows you to overload the lift. It's a tool for getting stronger, not a replacement for strength, and should be used as such.

i bought one at the arnold on friday thats different from that one but its the same principle.

What are your thoughts misc? cheating or not?[/QUOTE]

I don't think it's cheating if you are just using it to increase strength. It's made for overload training to get you used to locking out at that weight. You can't say yeah brah my bench is now like 405 because with a slingshot it don't count.... Although there is equipped and unequiped powerlifting so I guess it's a similar principle

For anyone who is thinking about buying a Slingshot, The whole point behind the sling shot is to keep the elbows tucked and the hands a thumb length out from where the center knurling would begin, I don't own a Slingshot personally but i feel it is possibly beneficial "If" you know what is purpose is. Benching at a fixed position allows you to be come more tight and secure, Basically meaning virtually no injuries and because you are at a more neutral position mechanically you use more muscle groups in which allows you to lift a greater amount of weight, Consider a rubber band if you take three fingers and stretch it out into a triangle, Now let's say you would take two fingers and stretch upwards and downwards, Which of the two is going to be able to stretch the furthest length? If you say the latter then you are correct, If the rubber band were alive it would choose the more vertical position, Reason being the rubber band doesn't play silly games, Why would he put himself in an abnormal position and potentially end his life when there is stronger and more safe route. Remember i don't own a Slingshot, I can see it's value in teaching people how to bench the right way coupled with the fact that it acts as a elbow wrap, I can also see it having it's disadvantages, If a person doesn't apply the same technique as they did with the Slingshot when go without using it i feel as though you could possible get injured, Remember it's all about technique nomatter the device, I personally have never used a Slingshot, I feel as though if i set up tight with my elbows tucked in and never leave that position coupled with the Valsalva Maneuver on racking and and before every single set i'm golden, I don't bench too much, I'm actually getting back into it, I use to love benching but i injured myself a few years ago and never had surgery, And have recently taken a few months off, I still hear cracking in my shoulder on every rep, I find that using a close grip elbow tucked with the Valsalva Maneuver on every rep is the way to go, If you don't use the Valsalva Maneuver and you strength train then you are very much missing out, I will note that the Valsalva Maneuver has been known to elevate the blood pressure very rapidly so i only recommended it to people who are training strongman and or powerlifting. As for me i will probably see about the sling shot eventually, I'm just having alot of fun with the Valsalva Maneuver at the moment, Maybe in a few months if i plateau.
