Why are 'modern' games going away from the epic awesomeness of random loot? Examples:
Diablo 2: You could find 'rare magical' items that had a ton of stat modifiers on them. If you were lucky, a few of those modifiers would be insanely high. If you were really, really lucky most of them would be insanely high. And, once in a blue moon, you'd get one that you used a scroll of identify on ... and your mind would be BLOWN by the fact that every stat modifier was beyond incredible -- a truly epic moment of the Loot Lottery of Love.
Star Wars Galaxies: Uhm... Wow? What to say here. You could find veins of minerals that had such mind-blowingly awesome properties that you could make armor that weighed almost nothing and provided insane levels of protection. Occasionally a Krayt dragon would drop scales that could only be described in legend. You could kill a Dark Jedi Master that sometimes dropped a vibroblade of stats that were NEVER SEEN BEFORE. You could put that very sword on your wall in your own house and visitors would come in and send you tells like, "OMG WTF BBQ HOW THE FUKK DID YOU FIND THIS??".
These days.. it's "omg I found an epic world drop that has the same stats as every single other epic world drop I've ever seen".
Where's the fun in that??????
