Is a salary of 60-90k salary good?

I have been doing some research and I used to think anything above 50k as a salary is good, but now I'm seeing posts inside and outside the misc saying you will need over 100k to be able to raise a family and not struggle. wtf.. do they mean combined income with a spouse or what? My career path is probably going to leave me in the 60-90k salary range and maybe more, but I'm starting to wonder what if I want a family. What would you consider a good salary as an individual, not combined income with a spouse?

60-90k is a great salary outside of LA, NY, DC, SF etc (you can of course still live well above your means on 60-90k in these cities)

in the misc anything under 300k is poverty

when you think about combined income for a family just think of all the insurance, mortgage, kids college, possible loans tuiton etc. it adds up quick

45-50k is a normal starting salary normally post-college.
The misc always think they'll be rockin 6 figures when they are 25. Some do, most don't.

Dude, you and your spouse would both need to make at least 100k each to not be in poverty.

60k-90k is more than enough for most places. Maybe everone in your family won't be able to have their own phones/tvs/rooms/cars ect.. but who cares. 60k is more than enough to live a middle class lifestyle

i think 100k combined household income is sufficient to raise a family. I mean, you are not going to be ballin. But you should be able to afford a decent place to live, good food, a couple cars, etc. You will definitely have to manage your finances appropriately though.

Depends on how you live. I have single friends that live paycheck to paycheck on 100k and married friends that make less than that combined and have absolutely no financial stress. I live on my own and need like 3k a month to survive living like a king with bar tabs etc because my cars paid off and the house I live in is way below what I can afford. This basically leaves all my income as discretionary.

Misc has retarded standards. Anything over 100k is like an executive level position. Misc is full of 20-early 30 year olds, and I seriously doubt they're at an executive level position of their career. I doubt they're all doctors/lawyers either.

60k is a good salary for a regular person who isn't frauding.

I can break 100k eventually as a physical therapist if I'm lucky after years of experience. I am just trying to justify going into massive debt again to get the doctorate degree and at a minimum only make 60k out of grad school. grad school plus living expenses could cost me 100k+ in debt.

Strong knowledge of marginal taxes if you think 60 k a year takes home only 70% of their income. Even maxing your 401 k and paying health insurance you'd be hard pressed to lose 30% of your pay check.

Having money makes it easy to spend money. Most my friends are doctors and started at 100-120k but going from making nothing in school to that kind of money can make it easy to commit to a lot of pointless expenses before budgeting them in.

We put together a budget where we could get a 120k house, pay our car insurance, utilities, and all other expenses on a 60k a year budget. We found we'd have 7-900 a month in disposable income. That's if me and the future wife each make 30k and I make near that now while in school so we should make a lot more than that. I'm projecting myself to start at nothing under 45k so we should be more than ok on our budget.

50k a normal salary post college? Maybe if you're an engineer or accountant.

Most of us will barely crack $15/hour after college.

There is nothing wrong with being middle class. You just have to be better about knowing your limits and understanding your means. You can be perfectly ok with a decent house (mortgage around $1k - $1.5k), decent car (payment around $400), nice little perks (yearly vacations, nice little luxuries) and still save up a decent amount on a 80k salary. The key is to be disciplined.

The biggest risk between $60k and $100k isn't how much you can spend, its that your margin for error (i.e. what you can get away with if things go financially bad) is much, much smaller. As long as you manage that, you're fine.
