im in the market for buying and building a olympic lifting gym set at home and was wondering where or what brand would be best?
are bumper plates a necessity?

I won't say what brand is best until you know what your budget it. That will determine what you can get. Eleiko, WerkSan, Pendlay are all VERY good choices, but will vary quite a bit in price. Bumpers are a necessity unless you will NEVER compete, and even then if you can swing it, I would. Also, I would definitely get your bumpers in kgs, as that is what you will use in competition. It's also what every other country uses, so you will be able to compare yourself other lifters!!
