1. just curious, like not counting the protein you get from food, how many "scoops" of protein a day do you have?
atm i take 2 scoops of whey which is about 45g protein before bed, but thinking of bumping it up to 3, atm i get like 0.8 g/lbm protein
2. also i been reading more on the nutrition forum, and a lot of them are saying you dont need a calorie surplus to gain muscle size, just need to lift 3 times a week and get the 1g/lbm protein alongside a healthy diet.
so can anyone comment on that?

Only true for "newb gains" and overfat beginners. Afer that, you need to eat above maintenance to gain muscle. Can't really build something out of nothing.

The only time I take protein shakes is:
1. If it's more convenient at that time
or
2. If I'm trying to hit a protein macro without taking in additional carbs or fats
Ideally, I'd take no protein shake
I'm sure you'll get mixed answers on this.
But, look at the pictures of the people who say do, then look at the pictures of the ppl who say don't.
Try to determine and separate those who are talking hypothetically from those with actual experience. Then make your determination. Research around.

5.
It's my main source of protein. Meat is really expensive here in France, even tuna isn't too cheap. I'm a student too, so can't be spending too much money on meat.
Protein shakes, cheese and omelettes are pretty much what I live off. Even buying in bulk, meat is really expensive here. Protein is protein, and protein shakes are a cheap way to get your daily needs.Currently cutting.

Occasionally I'll put ~20 grams of unflavored whey in my pancake batter, but most days I can get 140g+ protein without supplemental protein. I gave up PWO shakes last fall and haven't noticed any difference.
If I was in the position where I couldn't really choose my own foods (college dorms, live with parents, military) I can see the benefit of frequent supplemental protein, but more recently I am much more content in terms of satiety getting most of my protein from flesh and eggs.

this is true.
its also true that its usually being said to overweight newbs..... its usually not an issue as they "prove" it right if they try it for a couple months.... but it becomes an issue when someone thats been lifting and is past newb gains, or someone that is not overweight chimes in with what is correct for them.... they need a calorie/protein surplus to gain.

It varies a lot. Now that I'm cutting, I'll often have a scoop after I work out to hold off my hunger until lunch. Then if i have it any other time it's normally two scoops whenever I need the protein and/or I just want a snack and it fits my macros.
When I was bulking, I sometimes did as many as 4-5 scoops per day. Easier to fit them in when you have an extra 1000 or more calories to play with.~Cody

Mr Leangains himself Martin Berkhan disagrees. He posted this on Twitter only yesterday. Kinda blows his whole 'lifestyle' out of the water.

I dont believe i have to have a ton of protein but I usually have 4 scoops divided into 2 servings daily. 100 grams of protein total
Why do I do this weightlifting thing for the last 34 years with all its ups and downs life has handed me? Because each time I came back stronger. NEVER GIVE UP. Gym life is about more than muscles getting bigger and weights going up. Its wisdom discipline dedication humility you name it.
