    Where to invest 10k+?

I got used car i bought cash with my bonus/relocation, minimized my bills to basically rent internet and food and im ready to invest some money. Ive been in the stock market since i was 12, used to daytrade with my dad and had some success. Tried it during college and at work and its too stressful, I cant stop checking every 2 seconds plus its risky, damn penny stocks. What are better options? There has to be stuff out there I don't know about. Anyone invest in bitcoins?

Well what are you looking to get out of your investments? You're young and saving and investing now for retirement would definitely be a wise decision. Maybe you could invest some money into a few riskier stocks if you want to get a good sum of cash and can afford to possibly lose all that money. If I were you I would invest for retirement by looking primarily into a total stock market index fund, or possible one of Vanguard.com target retirement plans and just let your money sit and grow without constant checking. Or throw it all into a penny stock and hope to get lucky. There are countless options for you to do but what are your goals with the money?

Ive looked into all that and honestly after 10 yrs of experience in the stock market, ive concluded it is rigged and only the big guys in wall street make money (consistently). Stocks/options are nothing more than gambling if you dont have insider info. Ive trippled my money and also lost half of it at times. 401k's have shown to not be doing what they were designed to do for the first wave of baby boomers retirinig now, even with 15%+ investment. I have my 401k matching what my employer gives me and will use it for a down payment on a house when it get there, oh and its all in bonds. The rest i am 100% post-tax cash sitting waiting on an opportunity. 90% of those stupid "growth mutual funds" are also negative. I called the top of the S&P except 1 week too early and TVIX could have taken me down 50% if i didnt take my losses early. Of course it now jumped from 14 to 21 in 4 days but how the fck are you supposed to catch a falling knife? Anyways, im inquiring mainly about non-stock market related investments while i do keep my eye on it..

Definately depends on goals and if you want the money long term or short term.

Personally, I would go long term and diversify your portfolio between some gold, mutual funds, dividend-paying stocks, etc... and maybe throw a few bucks (less than 5% of portfolio) and gamble on some penny stocks.

Also OP, right now with the housing market an absolute mess, you may look at buying an income property (especially if you live in Florida). I have no idea how much houses are in your area, but you could feasably purchase a home, rent it out and attempt to have the rent money at least equal to the mortgage.

Go to vanguard.com and open a Roth IRA. Max out your contributions for 2011 ($5000) and put it all in total stock market. Put the other five grand in a bank account. Move it into your roth for 2013 and put it all in total international stock market. I know you think the market is rigged by institutional traders, which is probably true. That's why you own the whole market via low cost index mutual funds. Whatever institutional traders do for short term profit doesn't affect the long term value of the companies. Don't touch it until you need it for retirement.

I personally feel you shouldn't start saving for a house down payment until you max out all tax advantaged space. That means putting 17k in your 401k and 5k in your roth. Most people on the misc would probably disagree as the rental property route seems to be popular here, but I don't ever want to be a landlord.

bogleheads.org is a really good forum for buy and hold investing and aiming for early retirement.

That is a very good idea since I believe the housing market has bottomed out. However, I am in Dallas now where housing is extremely abundant and cheap now and anyone who has tried to make money flipping has failed. Im looking into foreclosed auctioned homes, but id have to fix it up etc and have no experience in that. I could work long term like you said, renting it etc but even that is a tough proposition right now apparently.

Do people realize the stock market has to go up for people to make money on the stock market? If anything this is the time id short the hell out of the SPY. It is at the highest its been in forever and at a point that has shown to be very strong resistance. Panic and volatility has just started to settle in as shown by the VIX and the drop can be spectacular with all earnings, fed printing money news, and every trick in the book out of the way, oh and greece iran israel looming. Long term it would be torture to see it go all the way down then back up for maybe a gain.

Edit: so no one does shady investments like bitcoins or buying rare sht and reselling?

Look into Mongolia (completely serious). Best friend I'm in college with switched his major from finance to accounting just to just join PwC's auditing team, he plans to start a business there.

You could also just try vanilla options. Although it depends on how much money you're willing to park up in your brokerage account and the margin they require.

    - Oyu tolgoi is under construction, expected to by one of the most profitable mines in the world
    - Due to Mongolia's small population and the ridiculous output in mine, contribute half of GDP by 2015
    - Louis Vuitton has already moved in (stated somewhere recently in a 10k)
    - next to resource hungry China
    - China get's most of its minerals from Australian mines (need to be shipped) (many Aussie bros on here know this)
    - Mongolia can just truck those minerals

    wait for it.
    - Expected to have same GDP per capita as Qatar by 2020 (wtf?)
    - IMF conservatives say growth is only 14%
    - optimistic economists say growth will be north of 20% once the mine starts
    - Tavan Tolgoi (coal mine) just began construction as well...

    Cons
    - hard to break into - their exchange is pretty sketch, from their website the government holds your trading money atm (i trust them over banks)
    - Like with all emerging markets, internet research just won't get you anywhere, probably got to fly there and see what's up

    You find this risky?

This is a WHOLE lot safer then investing in the stock market. And yes I will be betting on these three, but still thinking about what parlays I'm going to make.

Investing in the stock market is like gambling with REALLY ****ty odds.

Agreed but bovada straight up = gambling lol. Ive done some gambling and stupid sht like the clippers beating the heat to end their like 15 game winning streak always happens, i learned the hard way. Anything is possible but doing the parlay 3 things with good odds to get you 2x is good thinking and is the most id do.
