I find myself liking and challenging myself with heavy dips. Last thursday i did bodyweight plus 115 for a set of 3, and thats after regular bench and incline.
Is there much of a carry over from dips to bench?
And do you heavy dip on the regular?

Odd question, but how often do you do heavy dips?

dips r a great exercise for upper body strength, they r advocated by quite a few world class benchers like eric spoto,ct fletcher, josh bryant, pat casey etc.
most ppl seem to do them once a week.
ct fletcher would do them once a week after all his bench work for usually 3 sets of 10 adding as much weight as he could over time.
eric spoto (according to his training example)would do them after bench and closegrip for varying reps going up to 225 for 10 reps or 180 for upwards of 15.
pat casey would reportedly do them for hours on end (a whopping 8 hours) and had done them with 300 lbs around his waist weighing roughly 300.
josh bryant attributes his win at the atlantis strongest man in america with an easy 445 push press to dips.
jim wendler highly recommends them in his book 5/3/1.
unfortunately not everyone finds them comfortable, usually guys with longer upper arms tend to get alot of strain in the shoulders when doing them.
i personally do them for sets of 5 and ocassionally sets of 10.Magic wand,MAKE MY MONSTER GROOOWWWW!!!!!!!!-Rita Repulsa

I do 5x5, 5x6 or 5x8 nearly weekly on Sheiko (as prescribed)
When i have two 5x8 to do in the same week, i trade dips for floor press,cg decline or cg bench with chains on the 2nd day.
I go really heavy on them (nearly double bodyweight) and as low as humanly possible and i have yet to feel anything abnormal in my shoulders.
IMO they are a great exercise for pecs (lower portion), front delts and triceps. They help ensure that my lockout is never a problem and makes me handle heavier weights (400+) than I do on bench.Best total: 1715 (600-415-700) raw with wraps.
A method behind madness....

even if it didnt help the bench press (though i believe it does) its still a great exercise to get good at.
i concur with panzer with a 5x5 rep and set scheme to get used to adding more weight, one day if im doing +225 ill probably add more reps in.Magic wand,MAKE MY MONSTER GROOOWWWW!!!!!!!!-Rita Repulsa

I try every other week. I also love doing it, the bodybuilders look at you like you are satan though haha. Really does make you feel like a boss. My max is 4 reps with a 50kg..... Im guna try go heavier sometime just feels really dodgey going heavier, im sure i can lift it but scared i fail, its not like you can spot for it, so if your one arm gives in or your hand slips, its guna ruin your day... or month... and make you looks like a %&#$%@

i used to have the problem w/dips destroying my shoulders, but strangely enough i started doing with my head up, and with out swinging my body coming down, my shoulders don't hurt anymore, and i go pretty deep, below 45 sometimes even though i try to avoid that, been doing it for 3 months like that, and haven't had a problem like i used to with shoulders.
anyway at work i take exercise breaks, every hour or so i go to the gym which is 1 floor up from my job and i do a could of sets of pull ups dips and hyper extensions. 'Greasing the groove' per say, Monday thru Friday even on lifting day, but i stop 1-2 reps b4 i reach failure. and my pull ups went from 8 to 20 in about 4 months. Dips on the other hand i just started doing it, but i think it will work like i did with pull upsBrazilian Crew [<O>]
