People normally suggest .5-1 lb / week for clean bulk (limiting fat gains while gaining muscle). My question is, How do I know if I should gain .5 lb/week or 1 lb / week? I've been lifting for a little over a year now.

Please excuse me if that came across as offensive, as that was not the intention.
Start with 1lb per week. It will take you a long time to get fat, but if you honestly think you're gaining too much fat then you can cut it to .5lb. If you're not progressing as fast as you'd like too, I'd raise the surplus even higher."Whoa, peanut-butter does look a lot like Cum." - Alan Aragon

in the hospital I was on bed rest eating 2k, then 3k, then 4k until I started gaining because my body went into refeed mode
all my organ systems needed to be getting doing again, hormones, tissue repair

Speaking from experience, do what's most comfortable for you mentally. Some people just like to "get it over with" and get there then worry about building muscle once they're at a healthier weight. For me, though, I've done it both ways and am much, much more comfortable with taking it as slow as possible. Once in treatment I was forced to gain around 4-5lbs per week and that was the time I relapsed pretty much immediately because I had no time to adjust to the size changes. On the other hand, once in a residential program I only had to gain around .5-1lb per week over a few months and stayed healthy for a really long time and felt really good after that. So it's really up to you what you can handle best Take care.
