Why is protein powder so expensive now? I used to get 5lbs of whey for $30-35!

I would really like to know why the price of protein powder has gone up? Is it just pure inflation? Also have you guys noticed that the "Cheap Supplements" brand only has two products now? They used to have a lot more at dirt cheap prices to boot! Does't it make you think something is up? Think about it...the inexpensive brands' products start disappearing, then Higher Power(aka Bodybuilding.com brand), which USED to be fairly low priced suddenly jacks up its prices, specifically PROTEIN(they still have low prices for creatine etc.). Plus the several other big companies like gaspari, bsn, optimum nutrition, etc. who had high prices to begin with (40<price) now have them $10-15 higher than they did before! It's a F***IN MONOPOLY NOW!

Sorry if it sounds like I'm just b****in but this pisses me off! I'm a teenager without a job and I buy my supplements through the measly amounts of cash I get from doing chores ($3-5/week). Before I could a total 10lbs of whey (BOGO 5lb)for $32ish from Higher Power. The average cost of any 5lb whey was $30-35, now it's $40-55! WTH!

Just how it is now. U may not know it or notice but even milk has almost doubled in cost over the past few years. Not sure if it's the same everywhere but it is here. Everything has gone up. Many causes but it's just how it is.

Stop paying full price. Earlier this week there was a thread about good deal on the former version of myofusion, and I grabbed 4 tubs @ $30 each.

Also picked up some LCP for $20

That is correct supply and demand. The raws are much more expensive today and keep going up. The price hike gets put on the manufacturers, ON, Universal, Etc Etc so they have to charge more for it to make a profit. If they sold you a 5lb tub of quality Whey Protein for $30 they wouldn't make a profit, in fact they might even lose money. And by the time they test it, manufacture it, go through all the processes it's pretty expensive for them. Back oh 5 years ago they were getting the raws dirt cheap so they could make a profit selling it for $30. Today they aren't making any more of a profit even though they charge alot more for it than previous years. So when you see the price hike don't blame the supp companies. With companies like Kellogg's buying up so much protein for it's goofy little breakfast drinks and stuff, that makes prices go up to. Optimum is the biggest protein manufacture in the supplement world , but companies like kellogg's are buying up way more raws than even Optimum.

When you see a protein powder now a days that is dirt cheap, be skeptical of it. If it's quality protein it's not possible for it to be dirt cheap unless it's low grade, or corners were cut. Or the company is going out of business or something and just trying to get rid of it's stock. It's hard to make a quality protein with a profit while charging so little for it. I don't always go by price, but when it comes to proteins you have to. Once in awhile they might throw sales on them where they aren't making alot, but want to promote it's product from time to time and make little to no profit for a short time.

Or sometimes you get killer deals like the guy above my post is getting ^^^^^ you get those someone lifted them out of a truck deals And most likely they lifted them out of a truck to make a quick buck. You can't sell protein for cheaper than it cost to make it without losing, unless of course it's lifted out of the back of a truck lol

Several big companies competing means its not a monopoly.

I normally buy my whey for $28.87, saw some as low as $24 FS 2 weeks ago. When i splurge i pay maybe $35 . If you look around, its very easy to spot some cheap cheap protein! But generally, just on basis from base prices here at BB.com, whey has gone the F*&! up! I cant and will not pay about $45 for 1 tub of 5lb whey! I'm sorry, i just wont! You won't generally see to many awesome kinds of protein that low, sometimes myofusion, but you wont ever see something like syntha-6 for lower than 35, 5lb muscle milk, etc.

He is actually correct speaking from a straight economics point.. From this standpoint though, probably not. If supply goes down, producers lower price to initiate more buying at a lower price to maintain the same profit they would at a high supply and higher price.

For this standpoint, because the companies know that we are gonna buy powder if it is 35 or 45 anyway, they would be stupid to charge 35 instead of making that extra 10 dollar profit.

This here is why I absolutely hate Econ class

Don't go crazy over whey protein or any other protein for that matter. For some reason the sup companies are trying to convince us that we need a gram and a half of protein per pound of bodyweight, per day. It's just not true and most lifters are slowly destroying their kidneys because of it.

You have to put a little effort into finding the deals, but they're out there. I picked up 5 tubs of Elite XT for $24 a few weeks ago. Betancourt Big Blend was on sale for around $22 I believe WITH A 20% OFF COUPON AND FREE SHIPPING OVER $49. This was right here on bodybuilding.com not too long ago. It came out to less then $18 a tub for 35 servings of a great (and usually expensive) protein powder.

Decent price there. I think it might be a little more expensive at my Costco though. Tastes pretty good imo

    100% correct (repped).

    16g protein a bottle.
Pepsi doesn't do anything small. They started buying protein about 2 years ago, for this type of drink. Appealing to the 'common athlete' more than a bb'er. Its a huge market out there.
