Protein doesn't contain much energy so it wont make you "podgy". Just make sure you hit your daily needs.

I take a shake every morning with my breakfast and a gainer/recovery-shake post workout.

The only way you would get pudgy is going over your maintenance calories. It all comes down to cals burned vs cals consumed. Protein on rest days is fine. Just hit your macronutrients and you will be fine.

Protein supplements are meant to do just that- supplement your diet. If you're not getting enough protein, go ahead and take it, even on off days.

Protein supplements should only be used when you can't get all the protein from your everyday diet. This includes off days.
