Today was Sunday Funday
I went shopping and bought a really cool Rock & Republic top, went to a yummy lunch place, and had a mani/pedi. Now I've had my share of mani/pedis before and I've had my share of the nail salon massage chair bit before......but today was a little different.
Sat in my big comfy chair with my feet soaking in the pedi bath and "Nancy" turns on the massage chair for me. Nice rolling massage balls up and down my back, then the thumpity thump part then.....massage balls start rolling up and down my outer thighs....huh?!!! Ok, different but not bad....will continue. Relax, relax until.........giant softball sized massage ball thing appears out of nowhere right in the ol butt crack and proceeds to make it's way down the ol crotchety!!! Hang on, Sista How much more for an eyebrow wax and this chair?

Hey ya Bos
Thanks! Things really do get squishy! I've noticed a real intolerance to dairy now and grains are a definite squish factor with me. Good thing I grow a huge organic veggie garden. I'm so looking forward to getting out in my yard. I'll be posting pictures of my garden this summer! Right now my yard/garden is one big mud puddle.
Thank you You've been a real help and inspiration through it all. Have to say, I was happy with dat squatz booty.....dang

Phase 1/Week 2
Pyramid 12-10-8-8
SHOULDERS
Smith BB Press
20 x 13
25 x 10
30 x 8
30 x 7 Barely eeking the last few of these out. Was really trying to concentrate on not tweaking my right arm in while bringing the weight down. Not sure why I'm doing this. Not happening on left side. No shoulder funny business. I just need to keep an eye on my form here
DB Side Raises with Static Holds and Double Pumpers
12 x 15
12 x 15
15 x 12
15 x 12
I wish our gym had something in between a 15 and 20. My form sucks and my shoulders feel too strained with 20s (I battled bilateral shoulder tendonitis much of last year....not going there ever again)
Front DB Raise
15 x 15
15 x 12
20 (two 10lb plates held with both hands) x 10
25lb plate held with both hands x 8
Reverse Pec Dec
60 x 15
75 x 12
80 x 10
90 x 4
The gym was crazy crowded tonight. I had to park way the heck out there. Who are all these people and where did they come from???
Since starting this program, I have not been timing my rest periods. I have a little "problem" of wanting/needing to count everything I do in the gym. I'm not sure why there is a need to time rest between sets. If I'm not ready to lift after 30 seconds/60 seconds/90 seconds.....then I'm not ready to lift. I just wait until I feel recovered enough and I think my sets have been much stronger. Swoosh making progress in more ways then oneLast edited by swooshie; 03-06-2012 at 10:57 PM.

Interesting P and Swoosh.
I started timing with PHAT. I can do the space off thing, but also I can feel ready after 30 seconds and not do as well as if I wait 1.5 minutes etc. It has been a helpful tool on power days, to give myself a full two minutes sometimes. On hypertrophy it helps to make sure I don't go more than 1.5 min.
Can see how not timing rest is helpful, too, though- just listening to your body."You pass on more to your children and your grandchildren than your eye color, your hair color, your crooked smile. You also pass on your enthusiasm, your spirit, your desire to compete. You provide the living example that they can become more than they ever thought they could. Because you did.”

I generally give myself 2-3 minutes between lifts -- so I start a lift as a song starts, then I give myself the rest of the song to recover before starting again. It works pretty well for me, at least on starting strength where you can take that much time between sets.

I have NEVER timed my rest periods, ever. I go by feel 100%, of course if I'm doing something like calves it's a short time between, if I'm doing heavy DL I may let a couple songs play between sets. I see no benefit of keeping track of rest times. If someone gives you that BS reason it's for heart rate/endurance then they're not lifting very heavy for their strength. Cardio is cardio, lifting is lifting, simple enough.

I have been timing my rest periods since I did NROL4W a couple years ago. My stopwatch died on Monday and I just about had a panick attack (not really, but it does stress me out a bit). I feel like I HAVE to time my rest periods. When I don't, I either zone out and sit there way too long or can't stand to sit there anymore, so jump right into the next set and then it sucks. I can't see the clock from everywhere in the free weight area. I'm mostly paranoid of taking too long. I only have 1 hour tops, because I have to pick my kids up from daycare at a particular time or get charged. I think I need to get over my NEED to time everything, like you apparently have.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

P Ha! Sometimes I'm so totally oblivious to my i-Pod I don't even notice what song is on until my playlist ends! But, I always have to have it in the gym!
I tend to be very focused in the gym and since I've stopped timing my rest periods, I'm able to focus more on my next lift. I guess what I've found is I'm having more effective sets when I listen to my body vs starting sets when I'm "supposed to".
Hey ya, Gobbles
That's the conclusion I've come to. Why should I be concerned about keeping my heart rate elevated during weight training by taking rest periods that don't give me enough recovery. I think I've been using my rest times more effectively also because I spend them focusing on my next lift, giving myself a pep talk, or watching a hot beefcake's a$$ in the mirror
I've really tried hard with this program to work through a lot of OCD tendencies I have in the gym....like counting everything. I realized that working within the specified parameters of a written program can actually be a bit detrimental to my progress. For instance, if my program says 3 sets/12 reps and i can push out a few more reps past 12, with good form, I need to do that. If I can lift more, I sure as hell better be lifting more.
I'm trying to listen more to my body during lifts and rests and go with my gut vs the specific written guidelines. Because I am somewhat an analytical, slightly regimented person, this isn't always easy!Caring about what people think of you is useless. Most people don't even know what they think of themselves.
