What does pointing your toes out do (squats)?

Compared to keeping them more "straight on"?

Nothing. It is just a more natural way to point your toes during a squat, so your knees can track over your toes. Especially during a wider stance.

Point your toes however which way you want, your focus should be to keep the knees and toes tracking in the same line.

If your knees aren't tracking over your toes they are twisting. You don't want to load a twisted knee. If your knees don't track out, then it is virtually impossible to get to parallel. So to get to parallel your knees have to track out, and to do it without twisting your kness, your toes have to point out too.

Not an expert on this by a long shot, but my understanding is having them pointed out gives you more stability, also noticed that when I do that, I am working on strengthening the under active muscles. On the flip side, I personally like to have my knees point the same direction as my toes. It's hard to squat when your knees are pointed out.. ( A lot of weight that is )

Makes it feel a little more comfortable at the knees. And I can actually feel my hamstrings getting hit more so than with straight position.

This is one of those things you could take a few minutes out of your life to figure out by actually doing it.

Experiment with different foot angles and stance widths. Actually feeling the results will teach far more than an hour of reading sh*t online will tell you.

You should certainly be concerned with the angle of your toes. Just like you should be concerned with the width of your stance.

Its natural stance. It will feel akward to widen ur stance and point toes to front.

Since the knee probably doesn't like twisting, pointing the toes out probably has a tendency to encourage the hip joint to abduct and externally rotate, right?

So, related Q: what sort of diffs might exist between narrow stance pushing with knees/toes forward (probably could do this more dramatically on a leg press machine since you don't need to balance) and wider-stance pushing with knees/toes outward (variations of this get called 'sumo'/'plie' squats, right?)

Usually people say something like "adductors", but it doesn't seem to get a lot of analysis.

Probably doesn't get a lot of analysis because pebbles be busy actually squatting in place of theorizing potential theoretical possibilities of what might be if they try it through subjective floating clouds of wonderment.

OP try this..... Hang vertically from a pullup bar. Look down and see what angle your toes naturally point. Try and replicate that at the squat rack. It's the most natural toe position for squatting.

Nope, I've been holding off. Knowing i wanted to and probably should, but waiting to see if he posted something worthwhile so I wouldn't.

Ironically, he negged me just recently with the caption "Rude". Which I feel is completely and utterly preposterous! When have I ever been rude? Please...... name one time I've EVER been rude to anyone on these boards. Seriously... you can't find a single instance!

i was under the impression that going a little wider on the toe point (and subsequent knee angle) helps those of us with not super flexible hamstrings. i don't know though, maybe i'm wrong.

    Yes.

Plus pointing your toes out forces your hips to externally rotate which in turn activates your glutes and adductors more.
