Rome and Shogun2 are completely different games when it comes to system requirements. I remember i ran that game on a Pentium 4 perfectly.
It's still almost as popular as it was back in the day, the community just moved to Voobly since the Zone shutted down years ago.
Some games that are both quality and f2p so you cant go wrong with:
League of Legends
World of Tanks
RTS is my favorite genre as well. Some of the best games i've played:
AOE2
Company of Heroes
Total War series (Medieval, Rome, Medieval2)
CoH brahs who still play, add me: FerdinandS. I used to play top1% 3vs3/4vs4 in COHO.
Anyone who still plays Rome or Medieval2 can tell me how populated the multiplayer scene is today? Last time i played those were like a year ago but ended up uninstalling them because setting up a multiplayer game took loads of patience due to so few people playing.Last edited by Enemy11; 02-03-2012 at 04:45 AM.

sig
Even though the singleplayer campaigns are among the best i've played in any game, i'd strongly suggest buying the game to play the multiplayer. It's definitely where the strength of this game lies, it supports the game devs(theyre working on coh2) and it barely costs like 10 bucks nowadays.
This is just 2vs2, imagine what battles 4vs4 give.

Not repeating all the stuff that has been mentioned, since you love RTS:
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.
It's very different to the standard RTS formula, but imo, it's one of the greatest newer (2007) RTS out there. Check it out.
Also, Worms 2 and Worms Armageddon (more for multiplayer with mates though).
