Not experienced this but i would be guessing to next time keep it in the tub? It can go bad if it is exposed to like open air or moisture for long periods of time. The reason why protein powder doesn't expire is because its not hydrated, its dry.

EDIT: moisture creates mold mate, so probably wasn't sealed properly, therefore its probably gone off since the protein was hydrated.

Yes it can. Think about it..

    Whey is from milk.

Also they put it in that plastic to help it keep for longer, your mother was wrong to put it in a glass bottle.

It will probably last way longer than you would need it to as long as it doesn't get exposed to moist air frequently. As for the stinking it has never happened to me, just keep it in original container OP

    stinking whey

I'm noticed that some of my whey protein smells off also, and it started this summer, well before expiration date. I think the stuff gets heated in storage and shipment and that causes the fats to go bad. It also gives me stomach upset when I eat it. Other whey doesn't smell and doesn't upset my stomach. I found a new source, who pointed out the temperature problem and said they always ship their whey and supplements refrigerated. Their whey doesn't stink, even the same brands. Find a new supplier, and don't eat it if it smells bad. Glass should be just as good or maybe better than the original plastic, but if the whey is already stinking/spoiled, it can't fix that.

    Everything goes bad lol. Eventually...

Haha Whey has a pretty long shelf life I think due to its dry nature but as soon as it starts to smell different or gets sticky or obviously if you see mold then dump it. Seeing though it smtinks then maybe it might have gone off.

Stay on it until you get the runs
Started and can't stop. Scratch that. Will NEVER stop.
