Surviving Saddle Sores
So you have a big red pimple on your ass, or worse that area where only your significant other should go, not that there's much chance of that right now. Well for starters you should take better care of your ass and nether regions. But you didn't, so back to the basics.
Let's start with the difference between being saddle sore and having saddle sores. Being saddle sore is that achy feeling you get between your legs, (no not that one); the painful feeling that tells you you've been off your bike and out of the saddle too long. This also generally affects all newbies when they first start out. Saddle soreness is just that a sore achy feeling. Nothing more. It will pass as your ass gets use to the bike seat.
Saddle sores on the other hand are generally a three stage process and trust me you're gonna want to cut it's stage time to the first act. Acts two and three get progressively worse. Your first line of defense is understanding what saddle sores are and how to prevent them.
*Stage one is skin abrasions, like raw spots or chafing.
*Stage two is folliculitis. This is similar looking to acne- small reddish pimples. It feels a bit like having biting ants in your pants.
*Stage three is abscess. Trust me, this stage isn't pretty; blistering, puss and infected sores are never turn ons.
Saddle sores almost always start with skin abrasions, which in turn are generally started by friction. There are three important ways to prevent this from happening.
*First start by setting the appropriate saddle height and tilt. If your saddle is to high you will rock back and forth causing rubbing in unwanted areas. If the nose of your seat is to high you get rubbing but if it's pointed low you slide. If your saddle is to far forward then you sit on your crotch, instead of the sitting bones. This adds a lot of pressure to the soft tissues of the crotch area. Staying on the sitting bones when you ride removes some this pressure. You can also take the occasional standing break while riding.
*Secondly, always wear appropriate cycling clothes. Cycling shorts are designed with seam free padding to reduce friction, chaffing and absorbing moisture to help keep you dry. It's also important that they fit right and that you leave your panties at home. I give you permission to go commando. I also give you permission to lube the butt before heading out the door. There are a lot of different products out there but most work the same. Apply to areas that you know are prone to chafing or you feel are sensitive when riding. You will also need to apply a thin layer directly to you chamois. Start with thin layers until you eventually figure out how much you need and where to apply it.
*Thirdly, get clean; always wash shorts between wearing. I suggest this even for the antibacterial shorts. Wash your ass as soon as you take your shorts off and don't lie around in them after rides. I also suggest washing your bike seat down between rides.
If all this fails you and you find yourself with painful little miserable life sucking sores then I have few suggestions for treating them before you head off to a doctor.
*Minor chaffing or abrasions will generally heal with simple TLC. Get the area dry from sweat and cleaned properly.
Riders prone to chaffing and saddle sores often like to use A & D ointment because of the vitamins and zinc oxide.
*If you are suffering simply from the very beginning of say stage two of saddle sores which is a lot like little pimples then you may only need an acne cream and good hygiene for a few days. Sleeping naked will also encourage faster healing. However, if it's a bit more serious and causes you moderate pain then an antibacterial ointment will probably do you more good. Wearing loose fitting clothing during the day and sleeping naked will provide good air flow and faster healing. If you have very painful sores or open sores, this is the time to take a break for a few days and let the body heal. Never ride with open sores or sores that appear infected. If you suspect infection I suggest seeing a doctor.
Historically, riders used to stuff cuts of meat in their pants to relieve soreness but I don't really recommend this. Personally I think it might increase ones chances of being chased and eaten by wild dogs.
A few examples of
Friction Freedom chamois cream
Hoo Ha ride glide
Chamois butt'r
Bag balm
Utterly Smooth
A popular choice for riders who don't like lubes or creams is simply cornstarch. It's my personal choice. I sprinkle all over my chamois and other areas before riding. So if you were by chance in my house cooking and you needed some cornstarch might I suggest you not use the container from the bathroom.

Apparently don't every ones!! Some my team mates where staying at my house for a weekend and one of them brought his girlfriend... well we were out training and she was cooking. She couldn't find cornstarch in the kitchen so she used the one out my bathroom. She not happy to learn why it was in the bathroom and what it was being used for.
She baked pie with it. LMAO .. me and the guys still ate the pie!

It's the same girl we made cry... she's very,, nice and sheltered,, very proper girl. Absolutely nothing like me or my mates! I did point out to her that she didn't have anything to worry about.. being a cyclist there's absolutely no chance any hair being in the cornstarch!!

I studied Pentecostal snake handlers for a while... so yeah compelled.
OH and I got in my truck earlier and Scorpion was playing on the radio! That has got to be like some kind of sign from the universe or God telling me to do it! God wants me to drink that whiskey. I can't argue with God that would be wrong.

The coolest thing I own like that is Buddhist prayer beads from Tibet. The beads are skulls carved out of bones. Sometime I'll post a pic of them.

Don't lie boy I know what you get elbow pain from!!!
I have this slight pain and swelling in like the top section of my elbow and forearm, there's like a knot that forms in the crook of my elbow so I'm hoping if it I prehab it for a while then I'll be able to fix things before they become a problem. It's the right side to which leads right up the shoulder I'm having a little pain in so.. working on the shoulder at the same time. I'm def trying the shoulder vid from your journal and rolling it with a ball. I'm wondering about trying the ball thing on my arm where that knot is to?? I may try that and just see what happens.

I get a pain there, but no swelling or knots. I don't think the lacrosse ball would hurt to try there. Myofacial release everything!
